win xp home
point of view geforce 9800gtx+
intel p.4 3.2ghz
2gb ram
650watt psu
500gb hdd
nforce 4
just wondering why i'm getting a slow speed in games. well 3dmark05 results on 1024x768 are 9921 3dmarks.
result using 1280x1024 are 9673
and when i click "find optimal settings" in crysis it all goes to low settings and 800x600 and still plays slow at this low setting. i have updated to latest graphics and nforce 4 drivers but still slow. could it be my processor ? i dont think so but would like some help on this. any idea's.or could it be the 9800gtx+ drivers.

I doubt you'll find many people in these forums recommending Kaspersky Security Suite or any "suite" for that matter. Try disabling it, then run your benchmark again.

ran the benchmark 3dmark05 again no difference same score. but when i turned off kaspersky crysis played slightly faster sounds like the graphics fan is maxed out speed it's noisy i tought by the reviews that it was supposed to be a quiet one. anyway small bit of difference. it's strange that crysis runs the same slow speed at 1600x1200 medium ingame settings as 800x600 all low settings. unless the processor is causing this i'm not sure. but any more help or info would be great. and i done a complete factory install on this sys 2 weeks ago so should be clean.

"the processor is causing this"

You hit the nail on the head. The 3.2GHz P4 won't score higher than ~10K 3D'05 points no matter how fast the videocard is. It would produce the same score with an 8600GTS (even the lowly 8600GTS manages to hit 11.5K points when paired with an AMD X2 or Intel C2D processor).

" it's strange that crysis runs the same slow speed at 1600x1200 medium ingame settings as 800x600 all low settings."

The fact that you're unable to obtain higher performance by lowering the resolution/detail level is a sure sign that the processor is limiting your videocard's performance.

Crysis is nearly as CPU hungry as it is GPU hungry. Unfortunately, low game settings are the best you can do with a single core CPU.

ok need to upgrade cpu no problem will do that next week. this is strange as well i checked the core memory and shader clock speeds on the site i bought the card and they are supposed to be this...
core clock speed=740 which is correct
shader clock speed=1836 correct
memory clock speed= 2200 wrong.i tested with rivatuner and the memory clock speed is set to 1100. did they forget to clock the memory to 2200 ? why would rivatuner say 1100 when the memory clock speed is supposed to be 2200. any ideas or is rivatuner giving a false positive

Modern videocards use double data rate (DDR) memory. 1100MHz is the real clock speed, but thanks to double-pumping, you get an effective 2200MHz.

Overclocking and diagnostic tools will always report the real clock speed, while card manufacturers like to list effective speed.

Your memory's tickin' fine. :P

cheers for the info. well the only processor compatable with this rig is intel pentium dualcore 2.2ghz. it can't take a c2duo and i cannot overclock the dualcore 2.2ghz as it's a dell lol. so i could get the dualcore for the time been as it's only 55 euro if it even makes a difference. i could do with a less heat generating processor as well as this p4 3.8 is like having a heater in my room

Pentium Dual-Core or Pentium D? They're two different processors.

The Pentium Dual-Core is a Core 2-based chip with less cache and a slower bus than the Core 2 Duo. They're great performers for the price.

Pentium D, on the other hand, is a dual-core Pentium 4--hot, power hungry, and not much better than a fast P4. Because the two cores communicate over the FSB, multithreaded performance isn't as good as it could/should be.

Pentium Dual-Core compatible motherboards can also drive C2Ds. Because you wrote that your motherboard isn't C2D-ready, I'm gonna guess that it will only take a Pentium D.

Unless you can find a 3.2GHz+ Pentium D for $50-$70, the processor isn't worth upgrading.

pentium dualcore. i was onto dell a while back and they said this dell motherboard can support dualcore no problem i mentioned pentium d and said to them i wasn't interested just dualcore.but if i wanted to use a c2d then i would have to get a new motherboard which they said will not fit in this case. so according to dell tech a dualcore will work no problem. cheers

i love how everyone fails to notice, its a DirectX 10 game, and he's using XP... XP's framework isn't disigned to handle the API used by DirectX 10 as well as the hardware arcitecture of the 9800 series GPU...

you need to upgrade to Windows Vista in order to use DirectX 10 to its full potential... there is no problem with your GPU, CPU, or anything hardware.. just your OS needs to be Vista in order to work.

yes, i know, there have been DirectX 10 wrappers for XP, but believe me, being an indie game developer who has spent a lot of time researching high end game development, you need vista to properly utilize DirectX 10...

hope that helps...

Wipe the hardrive on your computer and reinstall everything. I promise you will see atleast a 40% increase on your XPS after doing that. Gets rid of all those uneccesary products dell put on your computer.
