Okay, I've searched and searched and nothing is working. I play half-life and its mods on the internet 24/7, and it's just unbarable now! My ping is constantly at 500 or more! I have my rate settings down as low as they go in hl, and the cl_rates (cmd, update). I've tried everything and it's just unbarable! Thinking that a new computer would fix it, it did nothing! I think it COULD be my phone lines since they are so old (I live in a small ass town). I have no idea what to do now...
Computer Specs:

40 gigs hd, 7200rpm
Ati radeon 7200
512mb of sdram
amd athlon 1.2ghz

My ping spikes to 1,000+ when Im in a battle with more than 3 people..HELP!

hi. I got some questions I want to ask you first.

What kind of internet connection do you have?
What is your video card?
Have you checked for any errors?

I play C-S 1.0.0.5 too, and I have DSL, so depending on the server my ping is 40-200 (mostly around 150). If you have a Dial Up Modem, i think 500 is way slow. I used to have AOL (and yes, the waol.exe does lag internet speed) and my ping was about 300, but never got that high before. This problem could be caused by your video card too.

Try going here. www.marketscore.com
It helps your internet connection for free, and it is useful for Dial Up Users. Try downloading all the drivers for your video card by the way. Good Luck.

I'm a 56ker, but I only connect at 26,000. It's not my video card, because even on my new computer I can't connect past 26,000.

Are you expeiencing more of a GAME lag or a internet lag? Video problems could often cause game lag and internet lag. Download the latest drivers for your video card just in case and try to tweak your Dial Up Modem if you can.
