CPU/Ram: 512 megabytes
Product: HP DV6000z

Hi, im new here. I have a HP DV6000z (I think) and im wondering what upgrades will make it better for gaming. I already got a good video card, (Nvida something 7200) so thats not the problem. I have 510 megabytes of Ram, and my dad says thats the biggest thing. I also have a Pentium M 1.6 Gigaherts processor. I can run HL2, but it does lag a little, on fairly low settings. I can run Warrock on almost completly high settings, but I want more. It does lag on highest settings. I wanna fix that. I dont think its possible to upgrade my processor.

My question is, what do I do to make this thing run games faster, and better? IF possible, I would LOVE to run HL2 on its highest settings. That would be a BLAST!

Thanks for help guys,
Alex

You should state that you're asking about a notebook/laptop.

Adding more RAM will help somewhat, but the major thing holding back your gaming is the weak 7200GO video. There's nothing you can do about it though because it's not upgradeable.

You probably have a single 512MB stick of RAM (possibly 2 x 256MB). DDR2 RAM is really cheap right now...you can get a 1GB stick of PC2-5300 for about $20:

Add more RAM & dial down your game settings. Double check your memory type here:

That's actually a big problem. The GeForce 7200GS is not a good video card by any stretch of the imagination. Unfortunately, that laptop's not going to allow you to upgrade its graphics card, thus marrying you to the low detail setting in most games.

By throwing in an extra gig of RAM, you'll at least be able to alleviate some of the jumpiness that occurs due to disk swapping, but you'll never be able to crank up the detail settings with a 7200GS under the hood.

The creme de la creme of Socket 939:
Opty 185 @ 3.2GHz
SLI'ed GTS-640s, both flashed to 625/1458/1950
4GB PC3200
Blu-Ray/HD-DVD, X-Fi
A8N32-SLI Deluxe
3DMark06: 13896

Oh.

Thanks for the replys guys. So thats the thing that makes it run slower? Or is it the processor? Why cant I upgrade it though?

I do have one stick of Ram right now. My dad checked for me yesterday.

So I cant get really good graphics though? Im not talking about anything like Crysis...just HL2.

Thanks,
Alex

Your processor is fine...very good in fact. The Pentiun M is based on the P3 & is actually superior to the P4.

"a 1.6 GHz Pentium M can typically attain the performance of a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4-M"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_M

There's nothing you can do about the graphics...it is what it is & you're stuck with it. After you add more RAM, you *should* be able to allocate more RAM toward the video (I'm assuming it uses "shared memory"), but don't expect a major improvement.

If you're experiencing lag in games, lower the settings...that's your only option. Unless you wanna invest $2000 in a gaming laptop?

7200GS not a good card???? pfffff
its a good enough card for half-life2,
its a laptop graphics card so its going to be a bit of a slug but you got a laptop. you should be able to get the settings up to med >high but not fully maxed out. any one who replys saying other wise are talking out there rear. cos half life2 is a 4 year old game and 7200GS should be more that capable.
infact i know it is cos i had one.

secondly more mem definetally! half life is super mem intensive.

thirdly make sure nothing and i mean nothing is running in the background. so no torrents downloading excetera

and thirdly which no one has picked up on. laptop hard drives are slower to access. so might be another part that slows it down. if you upgrade the ram this will cut this problem out since virtual memory will be being used less

now your using a laptop. so keep the thing plugged in when playing the games. im not sure but i think your laptop is one that sees thers no mains so it drops the voltage saving battery power reduces heat as well. but this slows the laptop down. effectivly underclocking the processor.

all text needs typos. There there for the reader to find,to distract them from the total lack of content.
google it! wasnt the answer to the question i asked so dont be dense and give me that repl

No, it's NOT a good card.

The keyword is HAD. If it was such a good card, why did you get rid of it?

We're not talking about a 7200GS anyway...we're talking about GO 7200 laptop graphics.
