Should I bother with a DX9 card?

So I'm building a new system in the next month and I'll need a new video card. Now, I'm not a huge gamer but I do play some and I'll be staying with XP for now so should I just buy a DX9 card or is that foolhardy at this stage since I will eventually be upgrading to Vista and DX10 is going to be the standard.

I don't want to spend a ton of money, about $200 or $250 Canadian on a mid-range card and from the reviews on Tom's Hardware, cards in that price range such as the ATI HD2600XT or the Nvidea 8600GT don't perform well.

Is this a driver issue since these are fairly new cards? Should I buy a very cheap dx9 card for now and wait until DX10 cards mature?

Any recommendations or suggestions appreciated.

BTW, I can get a EVGA 8600GT Superclocked 256MB card for about $200 Cdn. right now. I am, admitedly, ignorant about video cards but from the reviews I've read, this one is a decent DX10 card yes?
Anyone have one of these?

You could wait until DX10.1 cards come out which will be in the next few months.

So in the meantime, I'll need some kind of video card. Perhaps my best bet is to just buy a cheapo DX9 card to hold me off for the time being and see what comes in the new year.
