I'm setting up my son's PS2 so he can play over the Internet with his friends. I have a PS2 network adapter, Linksys Wireless-B adapter, and a wireless router to my cable modem. The adapter supports WEP but not WPA. I'm looking for any advice on what to do/avoid.
I have 128 bit WEP enabled on the router and SSID turned off. The adapter has a fixed IP address in the 192.168.x.x range. All I need is the IP address of his friend's PS2, right? Would it be a good idea to put the adapter's IP address in the DMZ because then all it can connect to is the PS2?

Too bad it only has support for WEP, and not WPA. You should monitor traffic periodically and make sure stuff isn't coming through wirelessly.
I can't speak specifically about PS2 and security because I don't play on console systems, but I can speak from a general networking security standpoint. You would want to avoid putting anything in a DMZ if at all possible.
I would do research on which ports are required, and only forward the ports, unless it's absolutely necessary to put it in a DMZ. I do know each PS2 game requires different ports. This FAQ has a list of some.

"Republicans in Congress are moving to ratify a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning, thus ending the Iraq insurgency."

Well, I'm not one to normally speak against the advice of a networker, but if you want insite from a 13 year old PS2 gamer, heres some stuff for you.
A) It is(in certain cases)able to use a DMZ to access a whole network if you are a VERY skilled hacker(or so i have heard), but it takes time and you would need to slowly change the firewall settings, so most people freak out and shun DMZ's...
B) You dont have to worry about that for the PS2 because in order to hack a network you would have to be able to access computer to computer information which is invalid for the PS2.Confused yet? In order to really understand what im talking about you will have to learn a small bit about writing viruses, adware, spyware, and hackware(yes there is such a thing)
These evils are simply computer code which is made through normal programming software but is made with milicious intent. Now, looking from computer to computer, it IS possible to spread these things. But not through computer to PS2! Why? because the PS2 ONLY ALLOWS YOU TO DOWNLOAD MAPS! There is little to no programming in maps and any there may be can only be used to change something simple like the way a character looks or the way an item acts. Thusly, since the PS2 does not support programming tools, you are forced into a very restricted type of code. And thats the code to modify maps.
If you dont trust me, you can just have your child only play maps that are non moded.(default maps provided by the game making companies). i hope you find this message useful. send an e-mail if you require more information.
