I was looking at laptops today (mainly for work) but I wouldn't mind spending a bit extra on one that can run games well too. I don't really want anything as expensive as an Alienware or Voodoo (who don't seem to use AMD 64-bit??), but I just can't find one that has everything I want on it.

I would prefer an AMD 64-bit 3400+, 1024MB DDR, Nvidia go6800 256mb PCI-e, DVD+/-RW, 802.11g, Bluetooth, 80GB hdd.

I can find ones with the AMD 64-bit processors for £600-£700, but they all have cruddy 64mb FX series grahics cards or a radeon 9700,

I can find ones with 6-series cards, but they all have a 1.8GHz Pentium M/Centrino processor etc??

Surely with this being the 21st century, it should be possible to buy laptop components and build yourself rather than having to buy some pre-packaged crap from a mainstream manufacturer that's got its head firmly wedged up Intels fat, greedy a*se ?

Surely there's a market for laptops that can be home-built to the builders specification and upgraded when the time comes etc, it can't be vastly more complicated than building a desktop? I know that most laptops graphics etc are on-board, but with all the technological ability available, isn't it time someone came up with a way to devide them up?

All of those components produce vast amounts of heat, especially when they are compacted into such a small space.
Its just not practicle at the moment, but it will be in the future when the components become more efficient in terms of heat output and size.

Manurfacturers spend a lot of time when building laptops; assembling them and getting them to fit. Becuase of this, I really doubt that consumers will be able to build laptops as they do PCs in the near future.
