Comment:

The game Red Faction doesnt work properly. It jumps around, in game, but mainly the mouse and keyboard stop responding apart from being able to look around the screen.

I should have up to date drivers and I updated the red faction version but to no effect.

My graphics card is 3D Blaster5 FX 5600 and processor speed of 1.8GHz

Any ideas?

I found this in the read me : "Red Faction has been tested with the following video cards:

NVidia Geforce, Geforce 2, and Geforce 3.
NVidia TNT and TNT2.
3dfx Voodoo2 through Voodoo5 (D3D only).
Matrox G400.
Radeon.
ATI Rage 128.
PowerVR Kyro II.

If your card is not on the list, you can still run Red Faction but may
experience technical problems."

Mine is a NVidia Geforce FX card so im not sure if its compatible but i downloaded drivers off their site.

I installed a driver for my motherboard chipset from my manufacturer but everything i have thus far downloaded has had no effect.

I'm having trouble finding places to get all of the drivers for my computer. I've had a look at the manufacturer websites but its not easy finding something you're looking for.

My graphics card is nVIDIA GFORCE FX.

My motherboard is made by GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY, its a K7 Triton series, VIA KT600 chipset. Model number: GA-7VT600(-L)
AMD Socket A Processor Motherboard.

Any help in solutions and finding drivers is much appreciated.

Chipset driver:

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1070

These video drivers were just released a couple of days ago:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_91.31.html

Before you install them, go to Control Panel > Add or Remove & uninstall the current driver, then reboot. If Windows tries to reinstall the video driver, cancel out of it & install the driver that you just downloaded.

Make sure to follow the driver installation hints:

hey, i have this game and play multiplayer occasionly.

http://redfaction.levels4you.com/

its a very developed community for the red faction game, so if people cannot help you with your problem here be sure to definitely check it out. you can also search there forums to see if anyone else i having similar problems as you are

just for your reference red faction is a directx 8 game, and i believe that card is a directx 9 card. Aside from that, many people are running with a similar setup to your pc without any problems.

from my experience, i know a guy who would get weird keyboard locking problems in multiplayer. he figured out later that it was his keyboard malfunctioning

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1070

but my computer crashed and i also installed the graphics drivers but without following the installation hints. Should I uninstall everything then reinstall what I need?

And I help plenty, thank you. I suggested he upgrade his chipset drivers. What have you suggested to help correct his issue?

*Scrolling up* Nothing...

If you're seriously getting on me for the light reminder that he should have followed the instructions, especially when he saw them, not sure what to tell you except lighten up. I didn't personally insult him or anything like that.

F**k sake what is this. Goddamned installation instructions didn't work anyway as my computer decided to start being an assh**e , probably because its made out of s**t and operates on a god forsaken program called windows ME. It likes to crash when doing various crap, its no wonder the game doesnt work properly. The best solution is probably to smash everything with my fist and get a new computer.

Anyway the game seems to work fine graphically, its just I lose mouse and keyboard control.

oh yeah i forgot to mention that the guy with the keyboard locks was also running on Windows ME. At a time I also had windows ME and red faction going, and encountered start up problems with the game occasionally (directX related). Since then the guy with keyboard locks and I have moved on to Windows XP, with no problems running the game.

I'm not sure if windows ME does this, but in XP you can right click the program .exe and choose an option to run the game in a differernt compatibility mode. This fix is used to overcome a bug in red faction when dual core CPU users under a windows XP OS cannot play the game, they get huge spike lags. Just throwing it out there that the game engine isnt perfect and the game company volition are real slackers to updates.

As I mentioned before, it would probably be wiser to put effort at this forum instead to hopefully solve your problem

Jason,

WinME doesn't do that anyway.

If you're running WinME, all I can say is good luck. It's probably the worst operating system Microsoft ever made besides maybe DOS4.

jason,heropsycho2177 hit the nail right on the head about win me,win me is undoubtely the worst os out of all microsoft's os's you might want to buy a retail version of either xp home or xp pro,win me is too buggy anyways,do yourself a favor and upgrade to xp you'll be glad you did,and plus you'll have a lot less headaches....lol i know from experience because i used to have a oem machine that came with win me,i feel your pain !! lol

OK change of subject. Say I have a win XP CD, how do I go about upgrading to it? Does the CD just replace ME and will all my existing programs work after?

Thanks

If you conduct an upgrade installation, theoretically all your programs will work after install, etc.

But from practical experience, an in place upgrade often doesn't work well, most of the time causing your system to run far slower than it should, but often causing system instability as well. I always recommend despite how much of a royal pain in the butt it is to backup your important data, reformat your hard drive, starting from scratch. It's very worth it in the end.
