i dissided to give my PC the last agp g/c upgrade.
i was going to build a new duo core system but cash is a bit tight at the moment.
got a short list of two.1...radeon HD 3850
2...X1950Pro
i would really like to go for the 3850 as its reputed to be the most powerful agp g/c around at the moment.+ dx10.+ ps 4.1
but my question is..would my current system run it??.and the X1950Pro because it just seems a good all rounder for not alot of cash.
opinions please.or if anybody would like to name some other good cards..feel free.
i have a 600w psu

It's not worth it. The cards you're considering sell for between $120-150. For about $200 (after rebates), you could get an A64 X2 5000+, AMD 690G mboard, 2GB DDR2-800, GeForce 9600GSO. You wouldn't be able to run all your IDE devices (assuming your HDD is PATA) but there's really no need for two optical drives anyway.
Or you could build a S939 system for even less. It would trump your socket A system, it supports PCI-e & you'd be able to use your old RAM, HDD, optical drives.
Foxconn nForce4 Ultra mboard - $35
Cooler Master AMD64 3700+ CPU Fan - $9
ASUS GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 192-bit GDDR3 - $55 (after rebate)
This combination should easily overclock to 2.75GHz. And for another $20-25 (after rebate), you could get 2GB DDR400 from Frys.com.
So for about the same price as a high end AGP card, you'd have a much better system. Then you could either part out your old system or keep it for a backup.

sorry, I thought you were in the US. I picked the 3700+ (San Diego) deliberately because it was probably the hottest single core S939 A64 there was. It has 1MB L2 cache plus it overclocks extremely well.
The fact that you're in the UK changes everything. How about setting your sights a little lower for the AGP card?

shame about the extreme postage.
i respect your opinions jam.....always have since i built this rig and asked your advice on overclocking it. so i think I'll go for it. the last agp g/c upgrade.
one last question before i do ...whats the difference between that and the radeon HD 3850. IE what I'm i losing out on.vista ultimate/sp1

The HD3850 is a much better card, no doubt about it. Probably the 3 best AGP DX10 cards are the HD3650, HD2600XT, HD3850 (in that order). I may just be getting hung up on the conversion from pounds to dollars. You would know better than me if the HD3850 would cost an excessive amount or not. I suspect it will be bottlenecked by your CPU though.

How about this one for £85? Notice the length of the card...make sure you won't have clearance problems with anything on your board.

which driver are you using? If you're using the ATI version, try the Sapphire version instead:
http://www.sapphiretech.com/us/supp...
Also, something that I neglected to mention & overlooked when I posted the link to that HD3650 was that you should look for a card with GDDR3 rather than GDDR2. Sorry about that.

tryed the sapphire first...then the ati

In your other post (hardware), you were asked if your monitor is properly identified in Device Manager. If it's listed as a generic monitor, try installing the monitor drivers.
