Hi,

Should I get a Radeon 9800SE or Pro? When will they be superseded? Do they run Halo well?

Cheers,

Matty

Halo is quite an old game now, both cards should run it fine.
The pro is the better one of the two.
The 9 series have been superseded by the 10 series already e.g: X800 PRO/XT ('X' as in the roman numeral for 10)

AMD Athlon XP2200+
Aero7 lite
512mb Crucial pc2700
Abit NF7-s V2.0
80GB Seagate SATA
120GB Seagate SATA
Geforce4 Ti4200 128mb
Benq FP767-12 17" 12ms
SB live 5.1 Digital

no cards run halo fine, lol
microsoft screwed up the coding
imagine that, microsoft screwed up the coding of it's own game on it's own operating system, imagine that

Where did u here that? Runs fine and smooth on my 9800se.

If there is its nothing a patch can't fix??

We only buy hardware so we can run software on it.

ok, well all i know is that it runs like crap if i go anything above 600x800 and im patched to 1.05
and this is on the same videocard, geforce3 ti, that plays Farcry on max detail high AA 600x800 just fine

and halo's graphics compare nothing to farcry

tis true about Halo's graphics (no mipmap, as farcry has), speaking of patches, when i was running Windows 98 I believe all the patches accumulated to more megs the the actucal OS itself, HA!

U said ("Farcry on max detail high AA 600x800 just fine") have u tried 1024x768 with no AA enabled? the higher the res the less need for AA.

ummm, maybe, i havent had much time to fiddle around with my computer lately so i just spend all my time playing
i do know that i was running at those settings for a while
i know, tho, that i need to upgrade
i had the afternoon off so i was experimenting with overclocking my proc and vid card
before ocing(2.2ghz cpu 200mhz gpu 480mhz vram)1220 3d marks 3d mark '03
after(2.376ghz cpu 220mhz gpu and 530mhz video ram)1296 marks
pathetic both times and even worse when overclocking
that vid card is a serious bottleneck
and on aquamark '03 i was getting before ocing 10000 and after 11000 only 'cause my cpu score went up about 750points

i really want to get a 9800SE for the overclocking potential

dont know bought that, I lapped my SE with 2000 grit sand paper to a mirror finish, I then slapped on some thermal paste and to go even further I bought a thermaltake 4800rpm fan to to cool that puppie down, oh not to mention the jimmy rigged A.L RAM sinks I put on. the card's core only went up to from 380mhz to 430mhz, likewise with the ram 680 to 720mhz, any further and i'll for sure see glitches in games. Hey, but the total mod cost was $20 for the two speed controlled fans, $2.50 for the compound and $5 for all that damn sand paper. Atleast now I have what I like to call a OC'ing tool box with all the right stuff I'm gonna need for My next card.

but, yes pros are still $200 at the moment, and the SE is $50 less, and there is a chance to softmod, so evaluate the probability of success to the probability of failure.

We only buy hardware so we can run software on it.

no, im not talking about softmodding
im just talking about ocing
i know that you already have to buy a $30 heatpipe cooler before you should even try to softmod
so it's just not worth it to save the money, you factor in the cost of the cooler and the probability of artifacts and saving the $30 is too big a risk
the only chance you have is if ati suddenly gets a big order of the 9800se cores and all of a sudden, runs short on them and has to start using fully functional ones

still, im up in the air as to my decision
im kind of torn between what might save me some money and what im really comfortable with, right now the sapphire 9600pro atlantis edition 256mb is looking pretty attractive, at least in terms of my cash-flow

and on top of all this, i just dont feel confortable overclocking my videocard
i try it every once in a while on my geforce3 and it just makes me uneasy
i worry about fan failure or just anything going wrong,
im so paranoid, i installed an 80mm fan hanging by a zip tie blowing right on my vid card

btw, i could not run very high detail noAA @ 1024x768 in Farcry, it was so bad, when i was just standing there watching the birds fly i skipped frames,
the game plays optimally, on my system, with very high detail noAA lowest resolution possible
