Subject: radeon 9800 installation problemsOS: Win XPCPU/Ram: PIII 2.0 Ghz/512mb RAM |
Comment: Hi, I just bought a Radeon 9800 Pro (this one: http://www.hisdigital.com/html/product_ov.php?id=28&view=yes). The problem is that when I install it and turn the computer on, nothing happens. The computer itself works - the fans are doing their thing, hard drive's making noises and so on, but no display whatsoever. No beeps either, my old video card (NVidia 440 MX) always gave one beep on startup. I've removed Nvidia drivers, installed AGP/GART drivers. The fan on the card works, and the card does get quite hot. I've left it on for about 5 minutes with no results. The monitor just goes into its sleep mode thing, and if you turn it on, it shuts itself back off. I also have a DVI->VGA converter, and I plugged my monitor (a CRT) in that way to see if it'd make any difference, but no dice. Any ideas? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)Does your board support the proper AGP voltage for that card? Did you connect the card to the PSU? Is the PSU powerful enough to handle the extra load? Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8.5 x 200MHz 768MB PC3200 Asus A9550 128MB/128-bit Gamer Edition WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)The PSU is powerful enough. The website recommends 300W and that is what I have. Out of frustration I even disconnected a bunch of nonessential stuff, no changes. I don't know about the board.

Reply: (edit)If you put the old card back in does the monitor work fine? If so remove the ATI drivers you installed and dload the newest Catalyst drivers from ATI's website. Reboot and let windows recognize the card then install the Catalyst drivers. Also try your 9800 in another comp, could just be a bad card, ATI will replace it for you if it is.

Reply: (edit)Yeah, tried the driver thing. I do believe it's a bad card by now, going to mail it off later today. It's refurbished, but Newegg will take it. I'm ordering a retail version now...
