Comment:

I am in need of purchasing a PCI graphics card. I play games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield Vietnam.
I am considering the Radeon 9200 (DX 8.1) or the FX5200 (DX 9.0), does it matter that the R9200 doesnt use DX9 and CoD does? which of these would be the better card for me to get?
Or is there an alternative thats better?

Cheers.
Dan

Radeon 9200, no it probably doesn't matter about the DX.
I'm guessing your reason for not wanting a AGP graphics card is that your Motherboard doesn't have a AGP slot?

Hope that has helped.

R9200 beats FX5200 but the only disadvantage is that the radeon has no SM 2 support

is the Fx5700 available as a PCI? Iv never come across it, and cant find it on newegg.

I currently use onboard graphics, which run the games i play satisfactory, but i wish to upgrade. And i have no agp slot on my mobo, but im not interested in changing it.

SM = Shader Model, or pixel shading as it's more commonly known.

It really doesn't matter.

Some people are like Slinkies?, not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs...

Agree that fx5200 is useless. My dad bought a 256mb one and sent it back a day later for a radeon 9600xt because it was slow and jerky in call of duty. It's basically a cheap nasty budget card tarted up with loads of cheapo memory as a marketing trick. Buy one, but I'll guarantee that you'll need to upgrade if you have any hope of playing the latest generation of games. Basically, the card may have 256mb of memory but it's too slow for games that only require quater of that and will be totally useless when games actually need 256mb. It may be Dx9 compliant but the card is too slow to run half or the Dx9 features so most games regard it as a Dx8 card anyway.

To give you an idea, before the 9600xt arrived, I put my 4yr old Geforce2 MX200 32mb in his machine just so he could use it for windows and stuff. Call of duty ran the same as it did when the fx5200 was in???
I don't think the 9200 would preform much better, since they're fairly equally priced. If you can't afford much for a card, How about picking up a used Geforce4 Ti4200 128mb for £35-ish on ebay, it'll blow the 5200 away.
