Quick, cheap upgrade?

OS: XP SP2
CPU/Ram: 3.4Ghz HT/1024MB
Comment:

I'm looking at upgrading my current PC so that I can run some of the newer releases (COD4, Crysis, etc) but I haven't upgraded in a while and I'm really short of cash at the moment (I'm only 18). I'm not an expert on PC hardware but I have a basic knowledge. My current specs are:

P4 3.4Ghz(with HT) CPU
1024MB RAM
Nvidia 7600GS 256MB GPU
200GB HD
On-Board Sound

The most I can stretch my budget is about $500 AU (about the same in US) but probably not in one hit either... so probably no more than $300 for the GPU (my guess as the most critical upgrade?) and $200 for whatever else. Any help/advice is really appreciated.

Thanks,

Kieron

Since you apparently have $500 to play with, you might wanna consider a complete rebuild. P4's never were all that good to begin with, especially for gaming.

If that's not an option, add more RAM & get a better video card. Decent AGP cards are much more expensive than their PCI-e counterparts though.

Don't waste money on upgrades, spare end buy a new computer. :p Those are games you'll never reach with that motherboard.

Thanks,

So I'm looking at between $1500 - $2500 AU for a new system, which of these two would be a better choice? Basically one has an 8800GT and one has a 9800GTX.
