Question on RAM

Comment:

I'm really into World of Warcraft right now, but one thing that really makes me mad is the lag in popular areas. I have 512 MB and I hear if you have atleast one gig, you wont get as much lag.

I THINK I heared somewhere that mixing ram sizes is a bad idea.. but my friend told me he has two diffremt RAM sizes.

So my question is: I have two 64 MB ram sticks from my old computer, would it be a bad idea to put them in my new PC with 512 MB to decrease the lag?

What about your other system specs? 512MB is adequate for most games, but what CPU are you running & what video card? Usually, the lag is caused by a weak video card. It's also possible that you have way too many programs loading into memory at startup

I'm pretty sure it's the ram, because people tell who've had 512MB of ram or less, they lag badly, but when they upgrade to 1gb+, they get hardly no lag.. My video card is fairly new, and it's nVidia, and I have nothing running at startup.

Well, I'm telling you that it's probably NOT the RAM.

There are 100s of nvidia cards...which one do you have? A weak card will give weak performance.

And yes, you do have programs loading at startup...everyone does! How many icons do you have next to the clock on the toolbar? Everyone of them is a program that's loaded into memory! Try hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del...when the Task Manager comes up, click on the Processes Tab...then click on the column heading User Name...that will rearrange the processes so all attached to you username will come to the top. You only need 2 of them...EXPLORE.exe & TASKMGR.exe...how many are listed?

I'm using Cable, my Graphics card is a nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X with 64 MB of ram, AMD Athlon XP 2800+, 2.1GHz processer with 512 MB of Ram.. I'm not sure where to find the serial number you asked about.

I use to play Final Fantasy XI and I recieved almost no lag, and FFXI has higher system requirements.

And as I said, one of my friends who had 512 MB like I do use to have the same lag, and the other day he said he upgraded to 1 gig of ram and said he had no lag at all.

Look dude, I'm not gonna argue with you...you insist it's the RAM, so go waste your money on some RAM.

Your video card is old, outdated, & never was any good to begin with. The MX440 is & always was a piece of crap. If you wanna cure your gaming lag, get a "real" video card that supports DX9 & has 128MB @ 128-bit

i had one of those cards before i upgraded to my 6200. they are crap. that is you bottleneck in your system. go blow money on ram if you don't beleave us. but you will be much happier with a new video card. just don't make the mistake of getting a 64 bit card, when the website says 128. go for something like a 6600 or higher.

Hey now, the 440MX back when it came out was a good card...

But now it does suck. LOL...

Get a video card first!

sorry HeroPsycho, I kinda embelished on the card's crappiness for added effect...lol! It's definitely not up to the task of today's games though.

I have an MX440 64MB card in my backup machine. It was a popular budget card in it's day, but it had a performance reputation similar to today's FX5200.

Then again, It wouldn't be a bad idea to add some more RAM if you're ordering a real grapics card anyway. a good brand 512mb stick of PC3200 is dirt cheap now anyway. May as well pay one lot of P+P for the two than buying seperately.
