I recently bought quake 3 arena because i liked playing it at my buddys house. when i was at his house, i found a multiplayer room i really liked. i wrote down the server address and tried typing it in on my computer. It starts to connect.. but then it says "Server uses protocol version 43" and stops. Any Suggestions?

Yup, that basically means the server is running a different version of the game to you. What you have to do is download all the latest game patches for Quake 3 arena. These can easily be found by using google. Once installed all should be fine :)
