I am having a tough time figuring out my problem with lagging during running programs.General maintenance of scan and defrag produces no result. I have 10 GB of space half of which is free.I run very little in the background.

Try installing all Windows Updates and set Virtual Memory to 1000min & 1000max.

Virtual Memory (both min and max) should usually be set to 1.5x your amount of physical memory for a gaming computer. "Display lag" in games can be caused by pre-caching on the part of your graphics card, but unfortunately cards differ greatly in this and other respects so I'm afraid I can't be more helpful than that. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card then you might try RivaTuner. It probably won't alleviate the problem that much, but it could result in a small change. Basically the only real solution is to buy additional memory.

by lag you probably mean that all of a sudden your FPS drops really low, in that case you should grab a new video card, and RAM if you can do that too.
