I got a conceptronic router, but when i play my game for more than 10minutes, it loses connection... What can the problem be? Do i need to do portforwarding?
Please help.

While it's possible to need port forwarding, usually to join a game you don't. The reason is virtually every SOHO router allows all connections originating within the LAN out, but allows no connections originating from the WAN in. In the case of you joining a game, you are initiating the connection, so the SOHO router won't block it.

Now, if the specific game requires other connections originating from the internet to your computer, there could be an issue.

What games are you playing?

Another way routers can cause issues is the very nature of NAT. Some applications cannot function unless the NAT device supports specific NAT methods required by the app. Usually, games aren't like this.

The NAT device could also just be a flat out bad one, and just doesn't work well, or its firmware could be buggy.

Have you tried updating your router's firmware to the latest version?

I tried half life 1, halo 1 demo and delta force black hawck down.

If i'd turn off the NAT firewall would that problem be gone? Because i dont see updates available.

This goes along with your other thread. If you have more than one device on your internet connection, how do you propose to turn off NAT? NAT is what allows you to share your IP address of your internet connection with multiple devices.

And I can't for sure say yes or no. We don't have a root cause yet for your issue.

"I found an update, where do i place this .bin file it gave me?"

They should have directions on how to update it. Follow your router maker's directions.

The device could suck no matter what firmware is in it. It could just be your current firmware is bad. This issue could be caused by poor service from your ISP. I'm only suggesting things that are easy/inexpensive to do. Upgrading the firmware is easy, free, and should be done anyway.

The games you listed don't have any issues with NAT that I'm aware of.

I still don't have any idea how you propose to turn off the firewall.

Do you or do you not have multiple devices sharing your internet connection?

If you do, you're going to need NAT (unless your ISP is giving you multiple public IP addresses, and most don't). Your only options at that point would be putting your PC in a DMZ, or attempting to forward ports, which I don't believe is necessary with the games you listed unless you're hosting a server.

how can i put my pc in a dmz, and what does dmz stand for? im unable to find my manual.

i got 2 computers connected to the router, and a dutch internet provider called "Chello", www.chello.nl.

I got to leave now so i'll read everything tomorow.

the website from my router is www.conceptronic.net, if you might be interested.

Anyways i'll read your reply tomorow, and if something comes up to me i'll post it.

Is there any more information or a website that could help me? (except for portforward.com)

DMZ = demilitarized zone.

Historically, it's a "No Man's Land" between two hostile groups, such as between North and South Korea.

For SOHO routers, it's a feature that many have that allows one device to receive all traffic that isn't being controlled by a port forwarding rule.

It's *like* turning the router's firewall off for one computer.

Again, this is something that is a major security risk. You absolutely should not do this unless it's a last resort. Before doing it, you should at the very least run Windows Update and ensure all critical updates are installed, turn off file and printer sharing on your computer if it's on, and that you do have a software firewall running even if it's the one built into Windows XP. (I'd run something better if I were you like the one I linked you to in the other thread.) Otherwise, it's only a matter of time before your computer gets hacked.

How do you do it on your router? Read your router's documentation. It should have something about it. It usually involves entering your computer's IP address into that section of the router's setup. You can get your machine's IP address by running IPConfig at a command prompt.

Again, I would try virtually everything else first, including replacing the router with a better one. Every broadband connected computer should have a SOHO router in front of it, preferably with an SPI firewall!

One last note:

Port forwarding is selectively opening up only the ports you need to get your application to work.

DMZ is the equivalent of opening ALL the ports at once, including the ones you don't need.

You should try forwarding what you need first before putting your PC in a DMZ.
