Subject: Problems gaming with routersOS: Windows xp proCPU/Ram: AMD 2.6/ 512ddr |
Comment: Hello, i am posting on behalf of a friend. He basically has a problem gaming online because he has 2 routers. Games like diablo 2 and ravenshield along with somes others, i can only host, as if he hosts i cannot connect. Games like all the Command & Conquers (except Renegade which works fine), dont even him let him connect to the online matching service (WOL). Whereas generals he cant connected to me when we try to play. I believe this has to do with his 2 routers he has. I am at a loss of what to do, as is he. My other friends with 1 router, we can get them working. Here is what he has: Dynalink RTA100+ internet Netgear WRT824 network And he has it connected like this: RTA 100 + is connected to the internet, netgear router is only being used as a hub, the RTA is NOT connected to the WAN port in the netgear router it is connected to the normal computer ports. The reason for that is because the netgear router only supports cable modem connections in the wan port. and here are some of the ports we have been trying to get working for the C&CS: http://strike-team.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=43072 PLEASE HELP!!!! this is driving me up the wall, not to mention he is already stuck up there :S any help would be appreciated cheers sterps

Reply: (edit)It's quite easy to verify if this has to do with there being two routers. Can't he simply use one and see if it works? Another notes: Make sure DHCP is disabled on the Netgear. Make sure the Netgear does not have the same IP address for its LAN and WAN interfaces as the other router. Make sure his computer has exceptions for the program in his software firewall if running one. May want to disable it as a troubleshooting procedure. Reply: (edit)Whichever router is connected to the broadband device should be the one giving out IP's. Please help survivors of Hurricane Katrina!www.redcross.org

Reply: (edit)Hi As hero has mentioned is the 2ndary router (now a hub)dhcp switched off & the NAT . is he behind a NAT firewall? most game connection problems can start with firewall, also has he forwarded the correct ports on the primary internet conecting router? note Port Forwarding (sometimes called virtual server) NOT trigger ports. Has he tested his game connection directly ie direct connection to the internet router via lan cable instead of 2nd router/hub? do the games work then or still problems?

Reply: (edit)He went to port forwarding, added NAT rules (to the dynalink router) and it made no difference in connection. also is there is an easy way to open all ports (regardless of risk) for easy compatibility. I have tried opening 1 - 65534 and it had no effect.

Reply: (edit)Put the server in a DMZ, but make sure you have a good software firewall enabled on the server before you do so. (No, the Windows Firewall is not enough.) Even then, it's a bad idea. Have you done any of the following yet? 1. Removed the non internet connected router and plugged into only the router that's plugged into the internet for trouobleshooting purposes? 2. Have you ensured that DHCP in the non-internet connected router is turned off, and DHCP in the internet connected router is turned on? If you have not done those things, I can't help you. Reply: (edit)Hi im wondering why your m8 is using the 2nd router as a hub? has he more than 1 pc connected? just get a longer lan cable. If not, set up the internet router and pc's with static ip addresses not dhcp!!,, may be everytime he switches on the game pc it is geting a different ip to the one set up in the router table for the game ports hence no game. my other 10p worth , its difficult to know what he is doing / or not... post 2 why is the netgear assigning ips? it shouldnt be doing anything as Hero said. best thing to do is write down off your other mate whose lan is working the ports he opened and setting for the dhcp what is port 65534 for? sure you have the right ones? c&c generals use: TCP ports: 80, 6667, 28910, 29900, 29920 UDP ports: 4321, 27900 also theres a patch 1.7 that fixes some router port issues. http://www.gamershell.com/news/10194.html how the router port table should be set up see unreal for example http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N101145.asp he is using NAT so dont use the port overide. -10p. :)

Reply: (edit)One is needed to connect to the net and the other is needed to manage wireless lan. The wireless router does not work as an adsl modem so the second router is needed.

Reply: (edit)It would probably easier putting the internet connected router/modem into bridge mode (If available) and using the routing cababilities of the netgear, thats exactly how i now have part of my network set up at home at the moment. Not sure if cable modem/routers can be put into a bridge mode, i know almost all adsl modems can be.
