problem entering full-screen mode

Acer / Aspire 9815

Specs: Windows Vista
I've been happily playing games on my Acer
Aspire 9815 for a couple of years. It runs Vista
and uses an Invidia GeForce Go 7600. All was
great until a few days ago, when any game
that usually switches the display to full-screen
graphics (ie, not in a window) suddenly
developed problems.

What happens is this: the program starts to
run, and the screen changes to whatever it
should be - but only for a second or two before
the program "minimizes": the normal desktop
returns and the program pauses in minimised
mode. Trying to restore it causes it to advance
another second or so before the same thing
happens again (the effect is somewhat similar
to what happens if you press the Windows
button on your keyboard whilst playing). The game doesn't crash and there is no error message: it just won't advance.

The only changes made to my computer
recently have been installing Adobe Photoshop
CS4 and installing a Trust Slimline graphics
tablet. What could be causing this?

Just a wild guess....try disconnecting the graphics tablet.

Hmm, thanks. The tablet wasn't actually plugged in, but I tried
removing the driver (I can soon reinstall it) - this hasn't been
the most trouble-free piece of software I've ever used.
Neverwinter Nights 2 certainly ran properly three times, so it
looks promising - but the problem is intermittent so I shall try
it over a couple of days.

Ah! I might have sorted it. Not the tablet software after all... I
think. I'm not sure what has changed on my computer to start
this problem after two years of smooth running, but setting
games to run in 256 colour mode in the preferences settings
seems to do the trick: NWN2 has now run faultlessly for five
