Subject: Power Supply?OS: xp proCPU/Ram: P4 2.4ghz/1gig pc 2700 |
Comment: If I purchase this MSI 6600gt, would I need to upgrade my Power Supply. I currently have a 400W, but it is stock and has been used for a couple years now...would it be wise to upgrade to 500W, I found one for 30 bucks, with good ratings.... here's the link http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/FeedBack/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16817192002

Reply: (edit)hmmm... it does not specify on the amprage. Make sure to get one that has 18a or more on the +12 rail for the output current. If that PSU you have right now came bundled with a case then its probaly not up to job. I say wait till your card arrives then test it, and if all is good then all is good...lol abit is7 i865pe Prescott 2.8ghz @ 4004Mhz 286x14 FSB @ 1144Mhz 512x2 in dual config @ 430mhz 9800 se unlocked & clocked @ 444mhz/800mhz

Reply: (edit)I believe the 6600GT has to be connected to the PSU, so it's very important that your's has enough amperage to handle the extra load. Never buy a PSU based on wattage alone...there are some 500W units that suck & some 350W units that kickass...you have to look at the specs. I just had a look at the ATRIX. For one thing, the specs aren't even listed...I would NEVER by a PSU without getting a look at the specs 1st. Here's the best deal going at newegg for a reasonably priced quality PSU. $36 & only 99 cents shipping. Notice how all the specs are listed? See the +12v @ 18A? That's the important one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153006 Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8.5 x 200MHz 768MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)Ok...yes the one I had came bundled with my case that I have had now for 2 years...so it is time for a new ps.....So you believe that this one that you suggested will do the job. I will probably also buy a new 120gig hardrive. So, that will be 2 hardrives.....I can spend more money if necessary....please post more good power supplies for me to check out....don't worry about the price, but don't be unreasonable

Reply: (edit)The Thermaltake that I posted the link to is a good unit & a very popular choice...just look at the number of reviews. But if you wanna play it safe without breaking the bank, here's a couple more: This 430W Antec unit ($75 + $6.99 shipping) has 26A on the +12v: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103908 This Enermax 420W unit ($77 + free shipping) has dual +12v (29A total): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103459 Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8.5 x 200MHz 768MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro
