Subject: Power needed for 6600 gtOS: xp sp2CPU/Ram: 1024 |
Comment: Ive got a xfx 6600 card in my 2500 m pc with 1024 mb ddr ram. When i bench on 3d mark 03 shows my gpu speed as being only 300 mgz when it should be 500 and i only get a mark of 8058. Just wondering if anyone know if the card is getting underpowered, is there a prog i can use to check this? and would buying a bigger psu get the full throttle on the graphics card? got a 400 watt atx supply running 3 fans 2 hard drives 80mb ide 80mb sata 2 cd/dvd roms gt 6600 card 1024 mem tv card scsi card.

Reply: (edit)I don't know where you're getting your info from, but you better check again. The 6600 runs at 300MHz. It's the 6600GT that runs at 500MHz. If you wanna get the GPU speed up, you'll have to overclock it. http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=911 Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz 512MB PC3200 Asus Ti4800SE 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)I'm confused...you mention 6600GT in the title, then say you have a 6600. Which is it?? Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz 512MB PC3200 Asus Ti4800SE 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)Jam, think your getting the wrong end of the stick here mate, it IS a 6600 gt came in the correct box. The card recognises correctly in all my hardware and identifys as a 6600gt in the nvidia driver. i can change the overclock speed to 550 mgz but i still only get the same result in 3d mark. The question i had was im only running a old 400 watt psu, with a molex divider powering the card from the cd rom connector. Do you think i need a bigger psu to cope with the drain. Could this be why i seem to only get 300 mhz gpu speed as its underpowered. The manual recomends 400 watt minimum psu cheers life is good

Reply: (edit)with some of the newer amd 64 mobo's they recomend around 450 watts if u r running a 6600. you probobly need a bigger psu. i have a 300 watt and my mobo recomends a min. of 350 watts. i can't run both of my hdds. and i have only 10v going through my 12 plug. so i need a new psu right along with you. p4 at 3330mhz 256mb pc3200 80gb wd hdd geforce 4 mx440 teporary Audigy 2 ZS dvd and cd burner only 15 so i am tight on cash

Reply: (edit)Hey firetrap, I know what you mean, this is not a problem with your PSU or anything like that, what happens is that the card manages two different clock frequencies, one for 2D (300MHz) and one for 3D(500MHz) the memory clock is always the same for both 2D and 3D (900Mhz), when 3dmark03 gives you the report, it does it in 2D, thats why 300Mhz show up. Also what are your scores in this benchmark?, should be around 8000. It is not that Linux isn't friendly, it's just that linux knows to choose its friends.

Reply: (edit)Mike, thanks for replying youve just given me the exact answer i needed and stopped allot of head sctratching from my side. So thanks allot for that. Ive been messing with my settings for a few weeks now and ive got a 550watt psu on order to try and solve this. If id have seen ya post earlier i may have saved 30 quid lol. the 3d mark prob has been really fcuking me off i set the gpu at oc 550 mhz mem at 1120 mhz no props. test in 3d mark about 8400 (is that any good??) sometimes it show 299 mhz in the results then other times anything from the 500 to 550 depending on what it feels like doing lol. But with the same mark about 8450. Aquamark 47,000. So thanks again mate at least i know whats happening now. PS ya seem to know what you on about could you recommend the best performance BIOS settings fot the 6600gt on a asus a7v600. Like agp apature fast writed on or off etc.... Trying to push my mark as high as poss. cheers ASUS A7V600 1024 DDR RAM XP BARTON 2500 MOBILE OC RUNNING AT 2438 (FSB 212 X 11.5) XFX GT6600 550 MHZ GPU, 1120 MHZ RAM life is good

Reply: (edit)Glad to know I can help you. On to your questions: Your scores in 3DMark03 are ok for the 6600 GT, but drivers may affect that score too (which ones are u using?). If u get a change test it with 3DMark05 and tell me how it went (should get around 3000), because 3DMark05 will bring the card on its knees, thus giving a more accurate score. As for AGP Aperture, you should set it at 256MB, and IF your mobo does fine with FastWrites, you should enable it too (I've heard some VIA's having issues with FW and 6600 GT's), so just try it. Also for Aquamark 3 it might be a little bottlenecked by the CPU, (as I've seen some going up to 58000-64000). You should also download SiSoft Sandra 2005 from guru3d.com, and run the memory benchmark, to see how much of the total bandwidth is being used. And depending on the results we can see what can be tweaked. Take care It is not that Linux isn't friendly, it's just that linux knows to choose its friends.

Reply: (edit)Hi there, Got my new psu 550 watts, and belive or not it has actually increased my score (fractionally but i could deffinatly notice it in 3d mark 2005 now run demo fairly smooth at about 15-20 fps) Test done on 3d MArk 2005 gives me about 3345. Im using the latest Nvidia driver 71.90 only been out a couple of weeks and seems to be working ok. Currently got my barton m set at 220 fsb x11. Latest via drivers. Ill do the memory test and post when i get a chance. All i can say is i had bios set to optimal and tested on agp aparture 128 and 256 with far cry, and it ran really badly when on 128. But ive ben getting about 600 points more in 3dmark03 when i change bios to turbo. But the turbo setting shadows out the agp apature option and sets it a 128mb. So my question is if it normally runs better on 256 mb apature, but runs ALLOT better on turbo when its set a 128mb what settings are being changed to see such a jump in performance??????? FAst writes seem to slow things down slightly. The other option ive got in bios is Performance control on or off - should that be on ???
