This is killing me! Got new games like Age of Empires 3 and Fable lost chapters but I can't play them because my graphics card doesn't seem to work.
My pc wouldn't boot into windows properly so instead of trying to work out the problem I just did a fresh install of windows.
I was without the internet for a while so I just used the only drivers I could find for my card, I think it was the catalyst 5.8 whql ones, which I presume I was using before seeing as they were still on my hard drive.
Games were very jerky when on full settings and the pc totally crashes and reboots after as little as 2 minutes of play. Lowering the settings and resolutions makes it last longer, maybe 10 minutes but it still always crashes. Some games are worse than others, but every game crashes, without fail.
I put it down to my pc not having any updates at all so once I got back online I fully updated my pc including service pack 2 for XP Pro and the new catalyst 5.10 drivers (I used driver cleaner pro beforehand)
Everything is done now, directX etc is all up to date.
Games play perfectly, I run Battlefield 2 on 1600x1200 at full settings and it plays great, but my pc still crashes!!!
Please help me someone as I'm dying to play my new games.

Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2
Catalyst 5.10 DriversSorry if I've missed anything

Seems like a case of overheating.
What do you think?
Try playing the games by removing casing of your cabinet.Sarosh

You could be right, I've noticed that before it crashes (when it goes for more than a couple of minutes) it seems to vibrate alot and I've felt the top of the machine and it does feel warm, but feeling it now its cold. I'll try it with the casing off and see how it does.
What I don't understand is why it does this now, when before I reinstalled windows it worked fine and never crashed once???
Obviously Battlefield 2 is a much more demanding game than say half life 2, but this is crashing on games that shouldn't, and never were a strain on my pc, like rome total war, sims 2, doom 3 half life 2 etc.
I just don't understand why its doing it now, when it was fine before!!
Will get back to you tonight to let you know if its any better

Just been playing battlefield 2 on max settings on 1600x1200 went for about 15 minutes with really smooth gameplay (was a bit jerky before when you turned sharply). Didn't crash once. Had a feel inside the pc, the hard drives are quite hot, but the graphics card was churning out some heat. Why the sudden increase in temperature??
It didn't heat up like that before.
What settings could I have changed to make it not work aswell as before (CCC and BIOS settings)
In the bios agp aperture was changed from 64mb to 256mb. In the CCC the AGP aperture is set to 8x instead of 4 and fast writes are on. I havent used anything like overdrive to overclock the card (I dont OC)
What settings can I change to get it back to how it was before or am I just stuck with the side of the case off from now on?

Your going to kill your hardware if your not careful, your going to have to figure out which component is at fault. Check all your fans to see that they are spinning up correctly, and clean any debrie inside the computer. Keep the case side off and have a fan running on the pc when your using it til you find out whats overheating (or it could be a lackluster or faulty power supply)

I'm leaving the side off the case from now on, the pc has crashed once and that was only after playing fable for about an hour.
The PSU is brand new, I don't think that is to blame. I think its definately the GPU thats overheating, it gets really hot. The CPU is ice cold all the time. The hard drive get quite hot, i could do with getting some of those hdd heat sinks off ebay, they are really cheap. There is a free pci slot underneath the gpu but then there is a firewire card, a sound card and the switch card for the fans. One of the fans doesnt seem to be blowing as much air as the other two but i dont think its that.
what ways can i keep the gpu cool?

Make and model of PSU?

If youve got a spare PCI slot under your card you could always get an aftermarket GPU cooler for your card like a Zalman VF-700Cu. I was having issues with heat with my X850, it wasnt crashing but was downclocking my card when it got to hot. I bought one of the Zalmans and it brought the load temp down by a hefty amount. I'd certainly recommend one for the price theyre at...

It sounds like a driver problem not all drivers are updated in windows update and some times the updates make the problems as they are a gernic version of the driver and might not work 100% for that peace of hardware.
1 program that saves me much head ack and i have tryed 1000's of programs but find this one workes the best http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/ it rules...
another program you might want is http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=30 this has alot of drivers for xp built into it so you do not have to look for them. The reason i say it is your drivers is because i have played with many different computers and have had this problem on a reinstall many times plus... if it worked before it should work again once its configered right.
Also I have found with my X800 xt pro ati agp graphics card it dose not like the driver catalist that comes from ati's site no mater what version i get off it and i get best proformance out of the one that come with the card when i brought it.Bit about me and my computers as well since you all put your specs down i will too because i just love computers and i do not do this for a job and no one has ever trained me but i have been playing with computers since the old MS DOS 4 color screen 5/half inch floppy lol 3.5 were not even out then, (i was 8 or 9 years old to then) never got full on into computers till the P1 166 come out, any way hope them programs help your problem.

Also go into your bios and set the the AGP setting it might be on first boot vga device as PCI first and allso have to set it in the bios what size graphics card you have to get max proformance for your system it could be set on e.g.
boot first slot device PCI
8x agp Disabled
agp size 64mbif the bios is set like this it will crash and play up and the card is overloading the motherboard as the bios is set to 64 mb and you are trying to force the slot with a 256 card also in my e.g if you were on pci slot as first boot device instead of (onboard/AGP)it will not be the main first boot up hardware for your screen and depending on the system might boot but have less proformance or might not be stable for long or just allways crash. Plus make shore you have the power plug hooked to the graphics card as it will play up or not work mine tell me if i forget your might do the same.
hope this helps as well.
