I have a NEC-5800A 1.05 DVD drive and use WinDVD (the free download version) to play DVD's. This seems to work OK for watching DVDs, but it won't let my kids use the DVD_ROM special features on the Harry Potter DVD. Does anyone know why this won't work? Do I need a different driver or player? Thanks in advance for any help!!

You may need either a different player or drive. Due to the companies trying to fit in as many flashy features as they can, not all DVDs conform to standards and might not play with certain hardware/software/dvd players. At least when playing with a computer as opposed to a DVD player you have the choice of trying different software. I am unsure about windoze, but you could try either PowerDVD or ZoomPlayer....
