is it possible to connect two playsation 2s (slimline) with a crossover cable to play lan games such as gt4 and cmr5

I don't think you can directly link them that way. What you need is an iLink cable which is a 1394 firewire cable. If you insist on the LAN connection, you need a router between the systems in order for them to see each other. The PS2 is not a router in itself.
