Why is my ping in an online game higher when I use cable connection than when I use a dialup connection? I mean the cable connection gives me a download speed more than 10 times faster than dialup connection, so shouldn't it have a lower ping instead?

Hi
it can depend on the service provider
some isp's can traffic shape games so your pings game data speeds increase over time so you lag.

Are you comparing different isps?

if so then they may route the ping through a different network, (possible if they are different isps.) so one may be taking a longer route

hi
have a look at the number of hops each isp takes to get there

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pathping

there may be a big difference between each isp connection path to the game server.

Pings vary during the day as load on servers affect internet traffic
for example before 12 am i can connect easily to USA game servers , however once USA wakes up in the morning the networks get crowded and my link lags simply due to the volume of traffic between my isp and the USA connection

btw even tho im closer to Europe that can be worse sometimes even the UK sites are have hi pings .

Okay, I found the place to perform an online pathping test for the game, it asks for domain name or host ip address(website), how should I know that of the game?(you can tell me if I really haven't a clue what I'm doing)

hi

the ip address is sometime given in the game

eg Unreal tournament /cod4 servers give out their ip addresses

, you can test pathping using any ip,

eg google

open a command prompt , start/run
type cmd

in the box type ping www.google.com

one of googles server ip is shown above

btw dont go ping silly once is enough :)
you may find they swap about abit some server farms tend to circulate the games.

& what game ?

Okay, now I know how to get an ip address of a website, but how to get that of a game? The game is Counterstrike 2d (obvious since it works with dialup)...

Sorry, never mind how to get the ip address(or domain or whatever it's called), I have figured out how to get it, one game server address is 192.168.0.1 , but I don't know what to choose as number of queries per hop before I start the test, what should I choose?
