Is is me or is having to put the CD in for a game extremely annoying? It takes ages, wears out your CD drive, and you eventually lose / break the CD anyway

How does everyone else manage this? Surely a system like STEAM (counterStrike) is the future?

Yeah, I used to do that but you often lose your network ability. (CnC Generals and Warcraft 3 for example went wrong)

AAAGGGHHH!! Steam is such a huge pile of crap, I cant put it into words how much I hate it. I would LOVE it if steam was not attached to HL2 and you just had to put in a CD or DVD instead. In 3 or more years when you go to freshly install your old copy of HL2 will the HL2 server still be there? It dosent seem likely that they are going to pay to keep servers running for 3+ year old games. It annoys me that I have to physically disconnect my computer from the router so I can play HL2 in offline mode so it dosent chew up my download limit. Also concider people on dial up, it would take several hours just to update it. (It also annoys me that you HAVE to update) Waiting for the game to be verifided and updated over the internet takes longer than the 9 seconds for a CD to be loaded and run up to speed......

I do that sometimes...

Ha, yes, please only take the Steam engine as an example! Merely a quick ping to the server on install is generally all that is needed. It's what all the big developer software does (Delphi, DreamWeaver etc.), why should games be so special!
