Comment:

i built a pc a couple of weeks ago on a budget and when built it restarted while i was playing a game (it only ever restarts in games) so i looked around on forums and a common thing for random restarts in games is a bad/not powerful enough psu at the time i had a 550w psu that came with the case now ive got a 700w but no luck ive also tried cleaning the registry, testing ram with memtest even swapping the ram but still happened, the temps for everything seem fine the cpu stays at 30-31c in game the gpu 50-
53c my gpu is fine so i dont know what could be causing this. i also formatted my hdd and reinstalled vista to check if i installed a wrong driver but it still happens its driving me insane any help would be aprecciated. heres my specs

op system: vista home premium 32bit
hdd: sata2 western digital 320gb
gpu: xfx 8800gts alphadog edition 512mb
motherboard: gigabyte N650SLI-DS4L
cpu:core 2 quad q6600 2.4ghz
psu: x - power 700w
ram:corsair xms2 2x1gb modules ddr2

also i have not attempted to overclock anything

I would be suspicious of the PSU. X-Power? Cheap, low end PSU made by Powmax. And as has been discussed in these forums many times before, you can't judge a PSU by wattage alone...amperage is what's important. Plus the PSU has to come from a reliable name brand manufacturer.

is there anyway to test the psu without swapping it with another psu to make sure that the psu is the problem?

and what psu would you reccomend as a replacement?

I supplied you with what you need to know in my 1st response. A PSU recommendation was made.

keep in mind too that cheapo PSUs may test out okay with a tester, but can still be providing dirty/insufficient power to your components. Even if that doesn't cause instability, it will shorten their lifespan. The only way to avoid this is to go with respected name-brand manufacturers (corsair, thermaltake, etc.)

That's always possible Kaithlyn but doesn't happen all that often compared to poor power issues.

There's no way to test a psu without some pretty expensive equipment. Money is better spent on swapping in a name brand power supply.

When I got my head wrapped around the idea that it's OK to spend $50 on a video card and $100 on a psu to support it, all those problems just went away.

All was not lost however--the cheapo psu's are powering old PII's etc. that I give away.

thanks for the replies guys. kaithlyn the cpu cooler is fine because the temperature stays at 31c under load (i have an asus arctic square so that should be fine) as i suspect its the psu. im having a look around for a good psu (currently looking at corsairs)
also the case i have is an antec 900 so that should have sufficient cooling for the stuff i have in my pc.

Is your system setup to automatically restart rather than display the blue screen error message? If it is, disable it & see what happens.

Right click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Advanced tab, then click the Settings button under Startup & Recovery. Under System Failure, uncheck the box next to Automatically Restart, then click OK, then click OK again. Try your game & see if an error message is displayed. If it is, the message should be a clue as to what the problem is.

BTW, I hope you don't think you wasted your money needlessly on a PSU. You bought a damn fine unit that should carry you for a long time. The same can't be said about the X-Power.

ive set my system to not restart when an error occurs now but still awaiting a blue screen error but it just seems to keep restarting in games with no error message if one pops up ill post it on this message.

also i dont regret buying the new psu as its better than the x-power and wont shorten the systems lifespan and the new psu itself should have a longer lifespan. so even though it hasnt solved the random restarts problem the new psu is a worthy purchase.

31C under load is suspiciously low...are you getting that reading from the BIOS?

Double check all your BIOS settings. Manually configure them for best performance, especially the RAM. With the FSB at 1066MHz, the RAM should be run as DDR2-533.

Test your RAM with memtest86.

Uninstall then reinstall both the motherboard chipset drivers & video drivers. Get the latest drivers available from nvidia.com.

Scan for viruses & spyware. Which anti-v program are you running? If it's Norton or McAfee, dump it & replace with AVG Free.

Use MSCONFIG to disable unnecessary programs from loading at startup.

Install CCleaner & use it regularly.

Defrag your hard drive.

ive tested the ram but no errors i even swapped the ram but the restarts continued.

i have uninstalled drivers and stuff many times even wiped the hdd and reinstalled vista but no luck.

also is there a program that could monitor temp of cpu and gpu while in game but i find it hard to believe its temperature because particularly on the cod4 demo it restarts straight away all you have to do is move forward but on other games it can last between 5 mins - 3 hours of constent game play before restarting
