PC games lag in Windows 7

September 26, 2010 at 23:10:44
Specs: Windows 7, Intel Core i7 Q820/8 GB
My boyfriend began having in-game lag issues upon installing Mass Effect to his laptop last week. Prior to installing that game, he played Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Empire Total War, and Dawn of War 2, all on the optimum settings with no zero in-game lag. He has since uninstalled Mass Effect, and did not play any other games after uninstalling it until tonight, when he tried to play Modern Warfare 2. He has tried disk cleaner, defrag, scanned the entire pc for spyware, malware, and reinstalled his drivers; all are up-to-date, as is his version of Windows 7. He has tried to to do a system restore to the day before he installed Mass Effect, but receives the following error code: "0X8007000D the data is invalid."

He has a Dell Alienware laptop that came pre-installed with Windows 7.

Model: Dell Alienware M17

Video Cards: ATI Mobility Raedeon HD 5870 in Crossfire

Processor: Intel i7 Q820

My boyfriend has only had this laptop for a little over a month, and it's disappointing to see it crap out so quickly. Any suggestions or fixes would be helpful!

If there's any other information I need to give, let me know! Thanks in advance!

This could be a hardware failure, but there could also be a process hogging all of his resources. Windows 7 has known issues with certain programs, such as Ventrilo. Try closing all un-needed programs from Task Manager and turn off your anti-virus.

If this doesn't work let me know because there are a few other things you can try.

We have tried turning off the anti-virus and other extra programs, and that didn't work. Are there any other processes that could be slowing the computer down?
