Comment:

Hi, I have a Gygabite 7N400 Pro II motherboard, AMD Athlon and 512MB RAM in my computer (Win XP SP2). The board has an onboard NVIDIA chip NForce 2 ATA Controller (v.2.6) however all my PC games crash and stop.

Have tried playing with settings but so far nothing helps and I would really appreaciate any advice to overcome this issue.

I think you missed the most vital detail:

What video card do you have?
Also... what games are you trying to play?
Does the entire system crash when trying to play or does the game crash back into Windows desktop?

You are right - apologies. The video card is an nvidia Geforce 2 MX/MX 400. And I have downloaded the drivers from the website.

With regards crashes, the game stops always at the same point and crashes to the desktop.

CPU temp is 52C and System temp is 35C.

The game I have been trying to play is Total War, all other office applications etc all work fine.

I have tried lowering the hardware accelerator, but it makes no difference. And I have also ran memory test using the bootable memory test disc and mem appears fine.

So I am totally out of ideas/ experience but I would appreciate your views.

i had the same problem with my navidia geforce 2 mx\mx 400 32mb, when playing battlefield 1942. so later on when i upgraded my ram to a larger amount the problem stoped. i had 512mb, and now i am at 1gig. i dont know if this will help your problem but it could be worth a try.

read, lern, and study before you overclock. if u dont know, then just ask please.. it could save you a few 100.00

May be a heat problem

I know this was a while ago but my old TNT2 card started the same behaviour until i realized that the thermal paste was really gritty and S**t. After a reapply everthing was fine.

first of all, if you've overclock your system(cpu, video card..etc) try revert back to default setting. see if that work?

next, try set bios to default. reinstall m/b driver(including agp driver). reinstall game.

these are something you could try.

If it keeps crashing at the same spot, I'd say it's a software error. Probably not a problem with the graphics card. But you really need to upgrade your GeForce, to like, and FX something. There could be a corrupt system file- try running defrag and scandisk. Or there could be another installed program that put on a system file of it's own that is interfering with Total War. And make sure that before you start the game that all background programs are closed, like any ativirus apps. Or any nifty little handy-dandy apps or utilities (like updaters or quickstarters, etc) that run on the bottom right of the toolbar. Hit ctrl+alt+del to see what's running and what processes you don't need. Then disable or close 'em. Maybe that'll do it. Or you could uninstall some stuff and then update the registry. Don't ask me how to do that, I don't have XP. Sorry.

I can't get over the fact that I have an AMD Sempron 2600+ 1.00 GB of Ram, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra(with the most recent drivers) and still I experience a system crash when I try and start games. No error message, the initial desktop picture of the game freezes in the desktop and my computer freezes and I have to shut it down. Doom 3 Did this Tiger woods 2005 my most recent purchase does this and tony hawk did it as well. Any help, which I can not find with tech support through any of the games would be greatly appreciated. This is not really a follow up, just googled my problem and found this sounds sorta up my alley. this is more like a person that shares the same problem. Thanks,

Matt
