So I just got a XFX 8800gt 512mb Alpha Dog edition. I want to overclock it but I don't know what to set it to. I downloaded RTuner and it says that the card is running at 600/900. What would you recommend I set it to? Thanks

Leave it alone...concentrate on the CPU & RAM.

the 8800gt's cooler blows big time because its a single slot solution so it wont overclock nearly as well as the gts u had. id say experiment to see how high u can take it in slow steps and test it after each step with an intense app like 3dmark06(forget the score cause synthetic benchmarks dont say anything about real world performance). i still think ur gonna be disappointed with the results. shouldve waited. take a look at this page: http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/reviews/...
although its for the 'XXX' edition of ur card it should give u an idea of what to expect relatively. based on the article overclocking gave only a 5% boost in fps in almost all apps. good luck.

Thanks for the link, I will try slow steps then. Hey zcubed, since your computer is almost the same as mine, how much of a difference did you notice when you overclocked your q6600 to 2.9 GHz?

another cool link with some Q&A. I tried Overclocking my cards but saw nearly no benefits from it....so, put to stock for longevity.

well my motherboard is my only limit. its a shame really. but going from 2.4 to 2.9 made a significant enough difference but ive also tuned my memory timings and such so no guarantees. game perfomance was minimally affected but everything runs much better especially vista. also i didnt need to overvolt mine to get it to 2.9. but my board wont let me boot at anything higher regardless of what voltage i give it. use cpu-z to find out ur mobo model and manufacturer.

Thanks zcubed, I will do a search for cpu-z. Did you buy additional cooling after overclocking?

no additional cooling is necessary especially if ur only targeting 3ghz. if ur going for more then u should consider a better heatsink/fan for ur cpu. also make sure ur case is well ventilated before overclocking.

The link that zcubed provided was for a card that was already factory overclocked. "This Alpha Dog XXX version is already heavily overclocked to 670mhz on the core..." So, of course they are not going to be able to overclock it much more.

That card had a factory speed of 670, whereas your card is running at 600. I don't know if the cooling unit on the reference version is the same as the overclocked versions. Assuming it is you should be able to take it up to 670 and remain as well.

Are you planning to ever go SLI? If so, than don't do it.
