do you HAVE to have DSL to ply games online(like unreal, WoW, and sport games), if not, how fast must your connection be? 52.0 kbps is not enough, is it?

u dont haveto have dsl but it would help tremendously. with dial up u have alot of lags and connecting takes a while

Even now with DSL people still experience lag,i have 1mb and it depends what servers i choose,i dont lag out like i did on 512mb but i still get the odd glitch,52.0kbps for online gaming will get frustrating, map's will take ages to download and you will get lag spikes, and you will get fragged alot more because your recieving information from the server slower than anyone else, you can do it but the experience wont be as enjoyable as DSL is.

Actually some of the requirements I have read recently require a "high speed" connection. I doubt newer games like FEAR, Quake 4, etc. would be enjoyable on a 56K connection... for you or the other players.
DSL has the potential to be fast and in some cases is comparable to cable. Just shop around and find the best speed for the best dollar.

Theres no question about it, 2mb cable for online gaming or just play single player. Take it from me I play just about every FPS online, at 1mb DSL, which I had through sympatico I pinged generaly 70ms which is acceptable but still a touch high. 2mb Cable I can ping up and down the east coast to just about any game server in the 20's to mid 30's.

ATI AIW 9800 PRO

Yes, but if you're talking cost to benefit ratio then DSL has the edge.
Pinging at 70 is certainly good enough to compete in an online game.
Personally I have cable and I enjoy it very much. I'm trying not to recommend my personal interests here though.

A clear line must be drawn between latency (ping) and throughput (Mbit/sec).
Low throughput can and does cause higher latency when the throughput has been saturated. Until that point is reached, your throughput has nothing to do with your latency. You can have 10Mbit/sec, but it can also have high latency. You can have 1M/sec with low latency, so long as your game doesn't use more than 1Mbit/sec.
Each application, whether it be a game or any other network application, has unique bandwidth needs. To complicate this further, many games allow you to tweak various network parameters that can effect bandwidth usage.
However, it can be safely said that a majority of online games these days either need broadband type throughput (at least 256K/sec, preferably 1M/sec) or offer a far superior experience playing on broadband type throughput.
If you play many of these games that don't require broadband against players who do have it, it's like racing a Yugo against a Ferrari. Sure you can get that Yugo on the track, but you're not gonna have much if any fun watching that Ferrari kick the crap out of you.
