Hi. I have lots and lots and LOTS of old hardware. I'm thinking about assembling an old computer just for games. I was thinking of a PII 400 or PIII 600, with an 40GB or 20GB HDD and 128MB or 256MB RAM. I just don't know wich graphics card to use. I have Voodoo 2, Voodoo 3, GeForce, Geforce 2. Maybe the Voodoo 3. As for Sound card I will use either an SoundBlaster 16, 32 or 64. And for OS maybe dualboot, DOS 6.22 and Win98 or 2000.
DOS was for the really old games. I was thinking of DOS in a separate 2GB HDD. As for the GeForce 2. Wouldn't a GeForce 2 be too much for some games? I know at least one game wont run on it. Blood Omen Legacy Of Kain will only work with interlaced monitor settings, and that sucks.
How about this? I could use the GeForce 2 and the Voodoo2, since the Voodoo2 is not graphics card, is only accelerator card and select the older games to run from it.
Just use the GeForce 2. It is both a 2D card and a 3D accelerator. If you have Audigy cards lying around, tben use one of them. Creative cards before the Audigy weren't that great in terms of sound quality.
The lean, mean, movie playing P3 machine P3-S 1400 @ 1.66GHz, 158MHz FSB 2GB PC2700 DDR 7950GT AGP Optoma 1280x720 projector JBL 5.1 amp and speakers Now storing 114 HD movies
I would use the fastest PIII processor - that will maximize the number of games the computer will be able to handle.
Graphic card, I don't know exactly from your choices. I had a GeForce4 MX440 that played any game until a couple of years ago. It was a huge improvement from the old GeForce 256, and was a great match for a PIII. I bet you could pick up an MX440 very cheap on eBay or elsewhere.
Hard drives, why not use them both? Install multiple OSes or use one for backing up your personal files.
RAM, again why not use them both? A 256 stick plus a 128 equals 384, a solid amount for gaming on Windows 98SE.
Sound card, no reason to not use the best/newest one. Those you've listed will all work well with Windows games.
