This has been Edited for the third time. i cannot make it any simpler. Edited by zenno. I do agree it’s a pain alright with this nv4_disp stuck in an infinate loop .But for me the problem came back as I had only removed the display drivers and the registry key’s last time. I should have removed the chipset drivers as well. (as I have just done and all working faster on games and no nv4_disp problem) It seems that by only removing the nvidia display drivers, it will work for a short period of time but removing both the chipset drivers (also known as smbus) and display drivers and then doing a complete clean of the folders they were located in has had a dramatic effect on performance. Well it did for me anyway. So if you want to try it and nothing else has worked for you give it a go. But this is only for dell systems as i have only done it on dells pc’s. Make sure you have a dell recource cd or your service tag for the dell update website and only try this if you know what you are doing.
download driver cleaner pro here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/downloa...
and install it. when that's done leave it alone for now. Right first thing is to go into add/remove programs, and scroll down until you see nvidia. click remove and a box will come up with information on what you want to remove. click on, " remove only the following ".
nvidia display driver.
and nvidia nforce pci system management driver.
when both are checked, remove them. Then restart the pc in safe mode (this is important) When pc is loaded in safemode go into driver cleaner pro and (BE CAREFULL HERE) in driver cleaner pro you will see a "cleaning selection. " scroll down to NVIDIA (only NVIDIA) and check the box (select multiple cleaning filters) and then click add. Then click start. Wait until it finishes cleaning. Then back in (cleaning selection) scroll down until you see nforce chipset, click it and then put a checkmark on multiple cleaning filters and click add. Then start. wait until it finishes cleaning and then close driver cleaner pro. Restart pc normally. Next what we need to do is find the folder where the nvidia chipset drivers and display drivers were located and delete all leftover files. The way I done it, was to use the Dell recource cd. I will start with the chipset driver first as I recommend it be installed first. Put in dell recource cd and when loaded look in "controller drivers","nvidia smbus rev". Select it and scroll down until you see "extract". click extract and what you will see the destination folder that it chooses. you do not want to install the driver just yet. it should say c:\dell\drivers\r103150 or similar. When you have the destination, write it down or highlight and copy the address. Exit the recource disc. DO NOT INSTALL THE DRIVER YET. Click start, run, then type/paste the destination you just copied into run and click ok. You should see files in here. DELETE ALL FILES. Then start up the resource disc again and do the same for the display driver. Don't forget you just need the destination for the folder so you can go in and delete the old files. When all files are deleted, then install the smbus chipset driver from the recource disc or the Dell website and install the display driver from here http://www.nvidia.com/Download/inde...
all should be fine.
