Asus mb p4c800d Bios 1.016 latest
Radeon 9700 pro Cat. 4.7

When playing BF1942 w. expansion "Road to Rome" & etc., the game always "halted" very soon after you could march in the battlefield, However, if the sound was disabled, the game could be played smoothly.
I had tried the modest quality setting, the sound was no good and then still hang-up soon!
I've thought of a sound blaster board, but is this the final resort? Other games no such problems!
Any suggestions, please?

Sounds(no pun intended)like a driver issue.
Have you downloaded the latest drivers for your soundcard?
You may want to also check to make sure there are no documented conflicts(check game manufacturers site)between your sound card and the game.
