For the benefit of others who are experiencing similar problems-- old DOS games only have sound when booted in MS-DOS-- I'd like to share what worked for me. And I'll try to give a brief explanation as to why it worked, so that others might try the same underlying principle. This may not work for everyone, but here's what worked for me (after basic troubleshooting failed):

-Go to the Device Manager
-Expand the section "Sound, video, and game controllers" (click on the "+" symbol beside it)
-Disable all items listed thereunder (they will probably be audio codecs, wave devices for voice modems, etc.)
-To do this:
-right-click on each item
-select Properties
-then click on "disable in this hardware profile"
-Game sounds will now go to either your PC speaker or plugged in speakers

I gleaned much of the following from other threads: apparently, port and IRQ issues are the cause of problems in DOS games. Even though everything looked fine and dandy in my device manager, I suspected a conflict somewhere- something to do with the sound. So I disabled the culprit devices (as detailed above) and it worked like magic. Old blips and bleeps came out to my satisfaction. Whenever I need to hear sounds in windows games again, I simply do the reverse (re-enabling devices).

Hope that helps

I see you still haven't quite mastered the 'specs field' yet (oh well)
