I'm not recommending this as an upgrade option, but what motherboard do you have?

I'd go for a new Athlon 64 3700 San Diego, an NForce 4 Ultra motherboard, and one gig of memory. Could go ahead and get 2 gigs, but I don't think it would be worth it for you at this point for gaming.

In reguards to the coment that 2gigs wont really help at this stage of gaming, I have to disagree with you. I just started playing Everquest 2 and even with a 7800GT I could only play on balanced settings. I just put in 2gigs of ram and now I'm flying on high settings.

Also, with him upgrading mobo and cpu, he will probably have to get a new vid card because most new mobo's with the 939 socket have pci-e slots and he probably has an AGP card.

ASUS A8N-SLI
A64 3000+@220x9
1gig Corsair XMS
EVGA 7800GT
Enermax 535W
Dual 80gig WD.

I am not familiar with Everquest 2, but I haven't seen a lot of EQ people saying they need 2 gigs of RAM. If you're running lots of apps in the background (mp3 player, voice comm, p2p apps, unneeded apps and services), or have malware apps on your machine, 2 gigs may seemingly alleve the problem. Not to say you shouldn't be prevented from running additional apps like an mp3 player while gaming if that's what you want to do.

However, the vast majority of games won't even see a clear performance advantage at this point with 2 gigs. Even Battlefield 2, which people claim can use it, shows a very small performance gain with it.

"Also, with him upgrading mobo and cpu, he will probably have to get a new vid card because most new mobo's with the 939 socket have pci-e slots and he probably has an AGP card."

Not true. Nforce3 Ultra based motherboards are AGP based. He could choose to go that route if he wants to keep his current video card. However, PCI-e video cards are often significantly cheaper than their AGP counterparts. A 6800GS PCI-e can be had for $160 currently, while 6800GS AGP's are usually $190-200.
