Anybody having performance issues with an HIS X1950XT? recently posted about driver support for this card, and the 6.12 turn out to support it after all. Now the problem im having is poor performance in just about every game i play excluding FEAR. these are my average FPS for some of my games maxed at only 1024x768, 4xAA, 16xHQAF:
COD2 - 35, rarely goes above 50
Oblivion - 27 average, goes as low as 9 /HDR, noAA
Hitman - 45
FEAR - 60 w/Vsync
GRAW - 40 /no AA
Rainbow 6 Vegas - 20 /no AA
3Dmark06 score at default setting - 4735
i'm running the games on the catalyst 6.12 from ati, all the games are patched to the latest versions, and running it on an AMD X2 4400+ @2.6Ghz, i even did a fresh format of the system to see if performance went up at all, but it stays pretty low. i've seen benchmarks of a X1950pro that had higher FPS than my card on a weaker system than mine. i have gone through and made sure there was no crap running in the background. my biggest concern is my horrible performance in Oblivion, which is the main reason i bought this card. in some areas it will stay at a nice 30 or 35 but then it just bottoms out at 10 or 15 in areas that aren't even that graphic intensive. only FEAR seems to work well. i'll try anything to get my performance to playable in Oblivion, could it be windows X64?

Have you updated your motherboard's chipset drivers?

ok, well i actually just found out what the problem was by accident, i started playing Gothic 3 and it took at least 10 minutes just to load the game in and then it finally loaded and i was getting 1 FPS so i CTRl+ALT+DEL and saw that my page file useage was at 1.6 gigs and i had 400 to 500 megs of ram unused. For some reason my PF was not being system managed so windows was running my games from PF which explains all the horrible load times ive been getting and why windows has been running so slow. i changed it and now im getting the fps i intended to get in the first place. stupid windows :)

Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced -> Change

It's best typically to set it to 2.5 to 3x the amount of megabytes of physical memory up to 3072 for both min and max to alleviate the burden of the system figuring out dynamically how much page file it needs at any given time. However, your mileage may vary.

LOL, that is a very comprehensive article, but bear in mind a few things about it for those of you reading it. The article is intended to be a guide for IT pros to tweak pagefile for desktops AND servers.

A. Don't think you will gain a huge performance jump on the typical PC running the typical applications doing anything other than adding more memory and setting the min and max to the same value with a tuned size you find works best for you. For example, I wouldn't tell someone to go buy a second hard drive for the sole purpose of moving the pagefile to it. Sure, it's faster, but adding more memory probably would have done more good. Many of these additional recommendations on that page are applicable to enterprise class servers running as email servers, database servers, etc.

B. Adding an additional physical drive can help performance significantly, but it may not necessarily be the best thing to put your pagefile on it. For example, gamers would probably be better off installing all their games on a second drive if they had one, and leave the pagefile on their OS drive.

C. Some people say 1.5x your physical memory, some like me say 2.5-3x. It really depends on your system in those cases. You should use trial and error to figure out what works best for you. However, if you want that optimal of a setting, this article does show the thorough correct way to determine the best size for you.

D. I did misspoke about the 3072 limit. That is true for 32-bit versions of Windows, NOT 64-bit versions. You can go higher. But again, experiment to see what works best.
