damn microsoft, always trying to make sh*t better and end up making it worse...windows xp is just fine really dont go screwing with it or making something new guys...

what does this mean for OpenGL based games and screensavers and stuff like that??

alot of games are OpenGL based as are many differant 3D screensavers (i personally love the 'really slick savers' but they are 100% OpenGL based)!!!

opinions??

except it IS Microsoft's newest OS and as they eventually do with all Windows versions they will stop supporting XP and XP will eventually be 'outdated' just as 98 is 'outdated' today...

one has to continue upgrading Windows periodically so as to maintain current PC usage and Microsoft support...

You're not telling me anything I don't already know. But you do NOT have to upgrade to a new OS simply because a new one is available.

I really don't know why anyone runs screensavers anymore either. Yea, I realize some of them look cool, but they're unnecessary & many are resource hogs...the worst are the OpenGL type.

"Don't run an Open GL screensaver--if a normal screensaver is a resource hog, this one is a resource black hole--unless you have resources to burn."

LOL, I love it when people dog an OS that's still in beta.

GDI must be layered over top of D3D as well in Vista, so it's not like MS targeted OpenGL specifically. It's that this is a design side effect of making the entire OS GUI done in D3D.

It's called power saving. It's good for the environment.

computers dont use a significant amount more power then, say, a stereo receiver. and people leave those on almost always...

A monitor absolutely uses quite a bit of electricity, CRT's being worse than most stereo receivers.

Even LCD's, which use 40% the electricity of a CRT, still is a major source of power consumption.

"people leave those on almost always"

Are you saying that most people screw the environment up far more than they realize for no reason? Shocking!

And I hope you're not saying since a majority of people do something, it makes it right. ;-)

Here in the US, we pollute the earth more per capita than any other country by a landslide. We do it because resources aren't scarce here, and the negative impacts we have on the environment are gradual, so we dispute them or are in denial about what we're doing. *cough* Global warming! *cough*

Case in point, you saying people leave their receivers on all the time. In Britain, there's a major push to conserve electricity by actually turning off your monitor, not the auto power down most people do when they turn their PC's off. The reason is that "auto-shut down" isn't turning the monitor off, but putting the monitor in standby mode, which uses electricity at a reduced amount, but still uses some. Multiply that out by all the people doing it across a population, and it's a major waste of electricity. Power being more scarce in Britain, there's a push to do common sense conservation.

In the US, nope. We got plenty of coal to keep burning to generate more power, etc., nevermind the additional pollutants we are introducing.

Now, you're probably thinking I'm a tree hugging liberal environmentalist, but I'm not. But I am in favor of common sense things to eliminate complete wastes of electricity, even if our resources aren't scarce. Screensavers instead of power saving is a great example. You don't freaking need a screensaver during periods of inactivity. I even push people to actually hit their monitor buttons to turn it off because there simply isn't a reason not to when you're not using the monitor for long periods of time other than you're too forgetful or lazy to do it, both of which are bad reasons. On the flip side, I actually encourage people to leave their machines on to auto-update their machines, etc.

Please help survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

Hi all

"Power being more scarce in Britain,( omg )there's a push to do 'common sense' (rofl we have Mp's u know) conservation." blimey save the squirrel,

we import French elec power Australian coal and Russian gas & somebodys dodgy spent U rods nudge nudge :) cheaper than making it ourselves , doh ,dont ask.. twas' Thatcher that done it.

and *every 4 mins we fill an olympic swimming pool equivalent in size with household garbage, creating methane*, global warming at its best.
Global warming eh? just gets cloudier & wetter here btw.
When vista hits retail we'll be under 18 ft water, pc not needed by then, we retroevolve into dolphins, so long & thanks for the fish.
