Comment:

Hi guys,
I got a Brand New ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128/256bit)
I put it into my comp:
ECS 741GX-M (Socket a)
Athlon 1000
1GB DDR 400
Quantum Fireball 20c(40GB)
Windows 98 Second Edition

Now i know i should put on win xp but thats another story, anyways since i oly have a 350W PSU should i upgrade because this vid card supposedly sucks up a LOT of power and for soem reason i cant play gta3....i mean i can play but it keeps glitching so i swaped HDD's and still but someone said "maybe your Radeon isn't getting enough power"
Should i get a new psu if so i can get a 500W for 20$
Why isn't GTA3 running smoothly?
I have WAY more than the minimum specs and over the recommended
Any ideas
THx a lot
Sincerely,
Darin Luckie

Thx in advance!!!

If your PSU was the problem, GTA wouldn't run at all, or would lock up usually.

Updated your chipset drivers for your motherboard?

I'd personally update to Windows XP before I'd take a blind shot with replacing the PSU to resolve your issue.

And a $20 500W PSU certainly isn't gonna be a good one...

I can play the game fine but it locks up (glitches) every couple of minutes and its REALLY annoying, im putting on xp as soon as i get a new mobo/cpu (SIS is CRAP)
then ill try again because with a gig of memory i doubt my mem is the prob so i ran memtest and it was fine
So my board is crap and i think my psu is too crap for my vid card thats why its locking up right?

Thx in advance!!!

Why not just go Athlon 64 or Sempron 64?

It's not as expensive as you may think!

Because then i need a new mobo/cpu and more $$$ and i only have 40$ and im in high school , and win x64 is nto even finished yet! My neighbour has an athlon 64 with 2gb of mem and 2 sata hdds running in raid and his comp screams! He's got the same vid card as me exce[t the 256mb ver...he says that the radeon 9800 pro can play any game out there..its powerful and 256bit version so its one of the fastest agp cards out there. I do NOT want a mobo with pci express or a processor that costs 400$!!!!!
I think 32-bit shoudld be in for a while even though they stop making them they got millions out on the market and 64-bit is WAY too expensive for me, hell i dont even have a job,
Any other ideas? I appreciate the reply though

AMD Athlon 64's (and sempron 64's) are faster in 32 bit than other processors.

AGP, so you keep your video card.

That's $110, not $400... Can't be any more than a new Athlon XP CPU and motherboard...

Thanks but i got a few problems:
1) I only have 40$ CAN (im a high school student with almost on $$$)
2)NEWEGG DOSN'T SHIP TO CANADA!!! I HATE THAT!!!!
3)I got mobo thats isnt the greatest but it aint bad (ECS 741GX-M) Yes you can yell and scream and try to convince me that SIS is the worst chipset in the world but well its ahrd to find good priced Nfore ce 2 chipset and there isn't much dif between the chipsets, i talked to a friend and foun d that the lagging is for either: a) not enough mem (256) or b) processor sux (Athlon 1000)
So i think ill stick with my mobo and my 1gb of mem and 256bit card and just get a new processor instead, anyways the stupid 64-vbit OS isn't even out and what's so special about 64-bit processors? Next thing i know it'll be like "GET A DUAL DUAL CORE PROCESSOR MACHINE" LMAO two opterons who would get something like that and 8gb of mem and 2TB of hdd space????

Thx in advance!!!

The Athlon 64's (and Sempron 64's) have integrated on die memory controllers. That's why they kick serious butt. The 64-bit extensions are for all intents and purposes meaningless right now.

I'm not saying get 4GB of memory, or a $500 graphics card. I'm saying before you buy another obsolete CPU, try to go Athlon/Sempron 64. Get some good PC3200 RAM for now, preferably a gig, since you can carry that over to the new motherboard. Then upgrade your motherboard and CPU without having to change your graphics card or RAM when you get the money.

Getting a newer Athlon XP locks you into a still older processor comparatively with no other upgrade path on that motherboard, which isn't very good anyway.

"Yes you can yell and scream and try to convince me that SIS is the worst chipset in the world"

Next to ALI, they are. Not only are they problematic sometimes in compatibility and reliability, but they don't perform very well, either...

http://www.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20030303/index.html

So...I would upgrade your RAM now instead, and save for replacing the motherboard and CPU, and go Sempron 64 or Athlon 64.

"Ok, thx but dosn't socket 939 only support PCI-e?"

No. Nforce4 Ultra is PCI-e only. Nforce3 Ultra is AGP. Both are socket 939.

"Before i pay for the mem should i take bac the pc2100 instead and get back my 256MB PC3200???"

I'm totally confused on what you have now, what you recently bought. You say you got 1GB PC3200 earlier in your post.

"and where can i get a good dela that will ship to cannada???"

Buddy of mine up in Canada uses this site...

www.ncix.com

Dunno if that's a good Canadian place for deals or not, but he seems to think they are.

Use those links above to price it out there.

If i get new mobo ill need 3200 right so should i get my pc3200 bac is my question?

You can run slower memory with Athlon 64's, but you really don't want to do that for performance reasons. The reason Athlon 64's rock again is due to their integrated memory controllers that do amazing I/O speeds to memory, so you really hurt performance using slow memory.

Just posting this about power supply if it might help you.
I got a 17 inch lg monitor, 40GB hd, lg cd writer, liteon dvd rom, 512 mb ram, geforce 6600 Gt and all this works fine on a 300W power supply, no issues at all.
However, I had to connected my hard disk power supply to the card. Any other power supply whould show up a warning message from nvidia driveers that my card is underpowered.

kool, ya i upgraded to 768 of 3200 instead of 1gb of mixed mem and my game seems to run fine, but for some reason i can't run the "Juiced" Demo, when i double click on it then It says it has produced errors and will close and then generates a report?
Any ideas on this?

When I have such problems I do what everyone else does.
Uninstall the game
Delete the game folders where ever they are
Empty the recycle bin
Restart the computer.
Reinstall the game.
Make sure vedio driver settings are at default.
Most times that works.

Sorry brother,
Looks like your bad luck.
I had this problem with painkiller when the installation procedure was interrupted. Also, your game cd or installation file might have got corrupted. Try installing the game on another system.
