Hey guys. Im thinking of getting this motherboard:
http://www.jetway.com.tw/evisn/product/p-4/p4x400dbp/p4x400dbp.htm
It is only 25euros, which is about $30. Is this motherboard worth it? Will it be able to run BF2 and COD2?
Also, if you can give me a list of other motherboards for under $100, that would be great. I dont mind if it dosent have onboard sound or LAN, all i want is one with at least 4 PCI slots, a few USB ports, and AT LEAST an AGPx8 slot.

Also, i would like to publicly apologise to jam, no hard feelings buddy, i think i might hae said some nasty things. Hope theres no beef.

You're gonna need more than a mobo to play those games with your current specs.

You're gonna need a mobo, cpu, fan, RAM, video card.

You should decide on which CPU before you decide on the mobo.

Best CPU for $100USD or less would be a Sempron 64. Make sure you get one with 256K cache instead of 128K.

That motherboard would not be the way to go because it doesn't have the right socket.

You would need a Socket 754 based motherboard, preferably with an Nforce3 chipset.

I would recommend the following brands in general: DFI, MSI, Albatron, Gigabyte, Asus.

I agree, if you want your system for gaming, ditch the Pentium and get an AMD Athlon64 (if money is tight go with a socket754 Sempron system).

goto www.newegg.com, they have many boards for under $100, you can get a sempron64 3100+ for exactly $100

as hero said, you will need alot more than a MoBo to get your system up to gaming specs, but those 2 items will be a good start. when you look at processors, don't worry about clock speed, clock speed is not as important as it used to be, especially with AMD processors, which are more efficient per clock cycle than Intels are

... and by the way, that recently "upgraded" PCI Sapphire video card was barely an upgrade from your onboard graphics controller and will not be able to handle COD2

Don't put a question here.

Jam...dont.

I know that card wasnt much of an upgrade, but it was the best i could get. I have just been offered a motherboard from a friend. Hes giving me an Thlon mobo, about 2.2ghz, all the details i could get from the mobo was that it was an 830cf motherboard. When i googled it, what i got was Jetway. Is this a good mobo? its brown, got an AGP port, microATX, 3 pci slots, onboard usb, lan, sound, graphics. Is it worth it?
Hes giving me the processor and 256mb RAM with it.

Also, hes giving me a RADEON 9800 128mb card. Its in good nick, all i need are the catalyst drivers(which i got a few days ago).

Is it a good deal?

No, it's not a very good board. It's a socket A (which in itself isn't bad) but it only supports 200/266FSB CPUs. It does NOT support the Athlon64, only Athlons & Durons, & depending on the board revision, it may not even support the Athlon XP. I'm a little suspicious about the claim of having a 2.2GHz CPU, but if the board revision is right, it will accept up to an Athlon XP 2600+ (2.133GHz). However, the board is based on an SiS chipset, & SiS isn't known for performance. The Radeon 9800 isn't a bad card...it's probably the best part of the deal. If he's giving this stuff to you, it's a no-brainer...take it! If he's selling it, it would depend on the cost. Is it better than what you have now? yes.

To comment on that, if he is giving this stuff to you, may not be a bad idea to buy an NForce2 Ultra chipset based board instead of using a lesser brand mobo (Jetway) with a crappy chipset (SiS).

"Also, will it run with an Athlon64 cpu???"

No. Wrong socket.

Ok, fair enough. I might get it anyway, if a better offer dosent come along.

What motherboard and processor would be a good combo? I reckon id only be able to spend $150 altogether on a processor and mobo. Preferably an Nforce system, and hopefully an AMD processor...maybe 64bit...?

A S939 Athlon64 CPU would cost close to $150 by itself. You can get a S754 Sempron64 2800+ & nForce3 250 board for less than $150 (US).

The board you linked to is a socket 478 board for the P4 & it's another SiS based board. I'm not an Intel guy so it's tough for me to make any recommendations

I've built a few Intel systems. If you're going Intel, you want an Intel chipset mobo.

If you're going to buy a brand new AMD mobo, CPU, Fan, I'll repeat...

Best CPU for $100USD or less would be a Sempron 64. Make sure you get one with 256K cache instead of 128K. That would be 64-bit.

For gaming don't go with Intel go with AMD. Also stay away from the SiS stuff because I have a SiS 620 card and it sucks when it comes to gaming.
