I'm looking to upgrade my gfx card, but the one I want to buy if a nvidia, and I currently have ati. Do I have to do anything before I plug the new card in?

You need to unistall the ATI drivers, then shutdown, unplug the system, remove the old card (if you have one), install the new card (make sure to connect it to the PSU if required), plug in the system, bootup & install the nVidia drivers.

But based on your RAM being listed as 512/448MB, I'm guessing you have onboard video, not a card. If that's the case, you'll have to enter the BIOS, disable the onboard video & change the initial display setting.
