Hey guys,

I'm going to be setting up a new gaming rig for my little brother which he is paying for himself bit by bit. I have my own ideas for what to get, but just as a for instance what would you guys reccomend? I'd be looking for a motherboard, processor and graphics card out of a total of £300. The rest I can rustle up myself for nothing.

AMD Athlon XP 1.8GHz
1GB RAM
120GB HDD SATA
GeForce 4 Ti4600 128MB
Nvidia nforce2 chipset w/ soundstorm
Pioneer DVD/RW
ABIT NF-7S Rev 2 Motherboard

300 pounds is approx $525 US

You'll have to give us a little better idea of what you're looking for. If you prefer AMD, you have the choices of socket A, 754, or 939. You can still put together a kickass system based on the socket A format, but it'll have little future upgradeability...on the plus side, you can build one cheaply. A socket 754 system will outperform a socket A & doesn't cost all that much more...it has some upgradeability. Socket 939 will be the most expensive option, but it'll hold you over for a longer time.

I don't agree with Avun's choices:

- If you're gonna go S939, get a board based on the Nforce4 Ultra or nForce4 SLI, not the plain vanilla nForce4.

- If you go with an ATI video card, don't go lower than the X700 series. If you prefer nVidia, go with a Geforce 6600GT.

- Get an Athlon64 based on the Venice core, not the Winchester

Don't just rustle up any type of PSU for the above components or you might be asking for it.

List of lists

Hi thanks for the responses people.

Here's a little more specifics.

I'd prefer AMD and nvidia boards/graphics as my system has those and is super-reliabe.

I'm ordering a case which comes with a killer-psu (580watt).

I'll check on the suggestions you've made!

AMD Athlon XP 1.8GHz
1GB RAM
120GB HDD SATA
GeForce 4 Ti4600 128MB
Nvidia nforce2 chipset w/ soundstorm
Pioneer DVD/RW
