I need help. I have no clue what i'm doing. I want to get a video card, but I haven't a clue what would be compatible with my computer. I am looking at the Radeon 9800 or Radeon 9800 Pro. Could someone help me? If you ask me for system specs, please specify how I find that information out for you.

If you have an HP with a Celeron & only 256MB RAM, the 9800Pro would be overkill...plus your power supply may not be able to handle the added load. Either post the exact model of your HP or post your system specs. You can get them by using CPUZ....just download it, unzip, then double click CPUZ.exe

http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php#download

Then you can tell us what CPU (speed & clock settings), motherboard & memory you have...

LOL...you didn't have to type it all, you could have copy/pasted

OK, you have a 2.0GHz Celeron (20 x 100MHz) & it appears 256MB PC2100 RAM. I assume you want a video card for gaming? We'd need to know whether you have an AGP slot available or not. Also, you should consider upgrading your RAM to at least 512MB

Looks like you have PCI slots only:

So I'd say your best bet would be an FX5200 128MB/128-bit card. Try newegg.com

ok, first, I believe I have both slots available, and I say this cause once before someone tried to help me with this, and they told me to type something into the RUN box and it made something pop up that I think said I had agp available. Other then doing that again, I haven't a clue how to tell, and I forget what it was I typed into the run box.

yes I want the video card for gaming..

and the problem with upgrading memory at this time, is I can only afford one at a time. and if getting the video card first will allow me to at least play the game, then I want to do that, even if it's a little slow till I can get memory updated.

another thing i have to have
Minium Pixel Shaders 1.1
for the game i wanna play.

oh, and i'm almost positive i had a radeon card before... i can't remember which radeon card, but the card died on me, i needed it at that time cause i was playing AC2

not sure if that info will help you to know if i have a agp card slot

again, i truly appreciate the help you are giving me.. i'd be lost without it, been trying to figure it all out on my own for the past couple of weeks..

PCI video cards are on the way out & the choices are slim. Whatever you get, check the specs & make sure it uses 128-bit memory...128-bit cards are roughly 40% faster than 64-bit cards & are MUCH better for gaming. For about $60, I don't think you're gonna beat this deal on the FX5200 at newegg.com

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814145055

If you're willing to spend more, there's the FX5500 for about $85

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143032

There are no Radeon PCI cards that are comparable to the above.

Like I said, choices in PCI cards are very limited...basically, they're obsolete & manufacturers have stopped producing them, except for a select few cards. You're not gonna do much better than the FX5500, unless you can find an FX5700. ATI has pretty much abandoned the PCI platform...they're still producing a few crappy cards like the Radeon 7000, 9200SE or 9250, but they don't even support DX9.

I gave you the best info I can. Get a card that uses 128-bit memory & supports DX9...if it doesn't state 128-bit memory in the specs, don't buy it! 128-bit is a selling point & it WILL be mentioned. Many vendors (& manufacturers) conveniently leave out the memory info on their 64-bit cards. If you can find an FX5700 128-bit PCI card & are willing to spend that kinda money, knock yourself out...to me, it's not money well spent...but it's your money to waste. Good luck.

i found a GeForce FX 5700LE 128Mb for 60 bucks.... that's actually less then the other one you said.. unless i am missing something.. could you please take a look and tell me if this is what i'm looking for..
http://www.targetpcinc.com/Details.asp?ItemID=2254&Res=2
and if it's not can you go here
http://www.pricewatch.com/
and tell me which one on this list is what i want?

Do you still consider 60 bucks a waste of money if it is indeed the thing i need? but I don't really have a choice do i? lol i'm not computer smart enough to worry about getting a new mother board.. haven't a clue about those,,, even less then video cards.

I hope i'm not irritating you, your posts sounded a little irritated.. i really don't mean to be a pest, just want to play games :-/

Thanks again for your help.. you have been very kind.

i am totally confused... i thought this was a pci card, but then it says agp..i mean the link I clicked on was for pci.. then on specifications it says apg... and it says
Features
Memory Interface: 64 bit
Memory Type: 128 DDR

so i don't really know if it's 128 or 64... *sigh* why does this have to be so difficult? ugghh..
If you could please stick with me a little longer I really do appreciate your help.

It's difficult because you're making it difficult! If an FX5500 that uses 128-bit memory sells for $85 & an FX5700 is a better card, wouldn't it stand to reason that it would cost more?? If it doesn't cost more, it's because it's a crappy card that uses 64-bit memory. We're not talking about how many megabytes (MB), we're talking about bits... & that info is staring you right in the face!

Memory Interface: 64 bit

Don't buy it!

That's the best PCI card. Geforce 6200PCI. Miles better than any of the FX series PCI cards, plus it possesses all of the video acceleration features of the nvidia 6 series. (includes DVD, WMV-HD acceleration, though with a 2.0ghz Celly, HD videos may not be an option)

I found this card BFG Tech GeForce FX5200 Overclocked 256MB PCI Video Card retail at:

I think this is about the best card for the money at $69.

That's debateable. The extra 128MB is pretty much useless on that card & probably even slows it down due to higher latency. The core clock is increased by 30MHz, but you could do that yourself to the 128mb/128-bit "standard" FX5200 if you really wanted to.

Bottomline is the 128MB/128-bit FX5200 for $60 is probably the better card. If you want even better performance, get the FX5500 128MB/128-bit for $85.
