hi viewmaster,
your onboard vga probably doesn't support nfsu. you will need AT LEAST gf2 mx400 with 32mb to play this game. i personally installed it on 4 pcs, 1 with gf 2 mx400 32mb, 1 with gf 2 mx400 64mb, 1 with nvidia tnt2 32mb and i with radeon 9600xt 256mb. only the system with tnt2 card i get the same result as yours.(blocky graphic which i can't play the game.) as you did not state with vga chipset you have, you might want to try update its driver or get a new card.
good luck.

I had exactly the same problem on my dads computer. His has an XP2500+, 512MB RAM and a poor onboard Geforce 2 8-64MB Graphics card. I tried installing NFS U on it and it was really blocky.

Nope I could not get around this problem. Even with new drivers, uninstalling, installing different things, different direct x verions. Nothing worked. So I just got a new video card.
