I haven't been on in a while because I was waiting a long while to get a new PSU. This is my new rig.

ATi Radeon X800PRO OCd to 546/560
Antec Smartpower 2.0 400 Watt

Highest 3dMark05: 5827

How do you like it? I am going to upgrade the RAM and OC the CPU more because the cheap RAM doesn't like overclocking at all.

kindof a way of re-introducing myself since it has been a while since I've been here and I wanted to show what I built since it is the reason I haven't been here in a while. Also, does anyone have a nice price/performance suggestion for some RAM that will OC well?
Also, I wanted to show jam that I do know what I'm doing because we had a small argument a while ago and I hope we don't get into anymore arguments.

Never heard of cyberpower. How does it look like their specs? I can give you screenshots of my specs if you want. I have 3dMark05 and I can give you a screen of that and I can even give you the link at the Futuremark website that my score is submitted to.

Wasn't asking for approval, wanted to make a point.

CyberPower is a custom PC builder out of CA. You can either buy a prebuilt system, or custom configure it. A lot of their systems are offered with the NZXT Nemesis case (sorry, I think it's ugly) & most come with Corsair ValueSelect RAM & a small 80GB SATA150 HDD.

I see you got a different PSU...was that because the case came without one, or because the one that came with it was crap? I saw that case at newegg, considering the price ($140 shipped) & you'd think they'd throw in a decent PSU...the specs on the one shown are barely adequate. From what I've read, the LCD display is problematic.

I assure you, I built this myself. I bought everything from newegg. The PSU was a total peice of crap and I bought a new one as soon as possible. The crappy RAM was because I haven't bought my new RAM and I am using the RAM I bought for my old computer temporarily. 80 GB is more than enoguh space for me :) All of us have thier preferences on cases and I think this one is really cool. It also has a lot of neat features like using rails to intall the disk drives and other drives. I am planning on getting the NZXT Trinity for my next build. It is very nice a sleek, you might like it.

80 gig drives are $60.

120 gig drives are $75.

160 gig drives are $90.

250 gig drives are $105.

Consider drives less than half full run better than drives more than half full. Therefore, if you buy an 80 gig drive, you're saying 40 gigs is enough space unless you don't care so much how your system performs.

Even if I don't need the space, I'm going 250GB considering the prices! But that's just me...

You spent $140 for a case w/PSU, then had to spend another $50 or more for a decent PSU? If you know me from my posts, you know I'm about getting the most bang for my buck...& that sure ain't doing it

I paid $120 for the case and got a $30 rebate so it cost me $90 and $70 for a PSU so $160 for the case/PSU. It may not be the most cost efficient but I liked the case and knew I'd have to get a new PSU anyway because it didn't have a PCIE connector.

I got my 80GB drive for $40 refurb. I do plan on upgrading when I have the money. Should I get another 80GB and RAID them or just get a larger drive and have them individual?

"RAID technology stores your data on more than one drive to make sure nothing gets lost and to allow recovery of data from failed disk drives without shutting the system down"

However, most people wanna use RAID 0 because of the performance expectations...the problem is, if one drive fails, you lose everything.

"Because RAID 0 only writes the data once, it does not achieve data redundancy. If one of the drives fails, the entire system has to be restored because all files are split or striped across all drives."

It started out gaming related and then just escalated...

jam, I knew that but my hard disk drive slots are 1 inch from a 120mm fan so heat isn't much to worry about for me. I guess a 25% increase in performance is not that much......but i'll take your advice and get 2 individual drives.

#1. I wouldn't trust a refurbed drive for my main system's only data store.

#2. About RAID0, people don't understand that total data loss from hard drive failure is twice as likely because only one of the two drives has to fail to lose it all. Performance increases for games is next to nothing because RAID0 increases drive latency even though it theoretically doubles disk throughput. Translation: Reduction of game and map loading at the expensive of a possible slight DEGRADATION in actual gameplay once the map is loaded, or at best case a 0% performance gain once the map/game is loaded, while double the risk of data loss due to mechanical failure.

I sure as heck wouldn't do it.

"RAID 0+1!"

Considering he bought a refurbed single drive, I don't think he's looking to buy four drives and a power supply that can handle that load.

Yes, I realize (and hope) you were being sarcastic. :-)

I see your point jam and said I was just going to get a new drive w/o RAID. Thanks for your input :)
Also, the refurb hard drive was in close to new condition and I backup all important things to DVDs so I have no worries about huge data loss.

1. How do you know?
2. It's refurbed because it broke. Could have been something easy to fix. But again, you don't know. In my experience, refurbed drives die far more often prematurely than new drives.

"I backup all important things to DVDs so I have no worries about huge data loss."

Glad there actually are people who backup; most don't.

At the time I didn't have the money to spend more on a hard drive. This refurb almost blew my budget. After I get a new one that is preferrably large because I rethought my plan and have decided instead of backing up my DVDs to more DVDs, I'll just put them on my HDD. I'm going to probly get at least a 200GB HDD and use the 80GB for the OS installation and ther system installations.

I dont see the point about people bragging about having a top-notch system. We dont find the engineers of Intel and Amd bragging to us. They are the real heros, I guess.
We just got the money to buy what they invent for us.
