Personally, i would do a fresh install. Backup all your important docs and format.

Also, you may want to consider trying Windows 2000

Download drivers (motherboard agp, video card) and see if it helps. Disable start ups you don't need by going to Start > Run > Msconfig...Check for any viruses with a scanner and check for any errors.

What kind of memory are you using. Check the compatibility and verify that it is comptible with th motherboard. Using cheap ram will cause the system to not boot up and damage the mobo.

I encountered nothing but problems with Win 98se, lagging, games crashing, etc. Reinstalled 98 many times to no avail. Got Win2k Pro, and everything works flawlessly now.

That's my success story, but your problem may involve something else. DirectX, video card drivers, motherboard drivers, the list goes on. Check in device manager for conflicts, also try lowering hardware acceleration to track down the problem. You could have a program running in the backround that is hogging the cpu and ram. I would suggest a format and a clean install of 98 if you can't track down the problem. 70 FPS???? since when is this a bad thing??? FYI, when you benchmark your video card, make sure vertical-sync is disabled.

I just typed a huge response to you and lost it, so this one's gonna be short.

In a nutshell, I'd get rid of Win 98SE and get XP. You have new hardware that will work great with XP, far better than it would under a junk OS like 98SE. W

Win 95,98, 98Se and ME were all garbage and now that XP has come out, I must admit,as painful as it is to say it, Microsoft has finally done something right.

Don't waste anymore time on 98. Spend the money for the upgrade, smoke your drive of all it's data and do a fresh install. You won't regret it and you won't be working on the damned thing every day for another problem using an OS that is no longer supported by Microsoft.

I've installed XP on at least 50 PCs and everyone work perfectly. I have yet to make a return visit to someone's house for one of these machines screwing up. I really mean it. XP is truly solid.

Good luck to you and hang in there.
