Subject: My computer became slow....why?OS: windows XP pro SP2CPU/Ram: 2.5 ghz, 1024 RAMModel/Manufacturer: Celeron D, intel |
Comment: A while ago, (few months) I downloaded the BF2 demo. My graphics card is the Radeon 9250, and although it is not technically supported, by changing the AGP settings, I got the game to work okay. (although not great) After a few months not playing it, I tried it out again. This time, however, the game was extremely choppy, video and sound, making the game nearly impossible to play, even on the lowest settings. Is this because my hard drive is fuller? Or is it a fragmented disk? Or is it my graphics card acting up? Perhaps a virus?

Reply: (edit)Hmm...there's a small possibilty of it being your hard driver, RAM, or maybe your graphics card, or a combination of the three. Is your RAM 1x 1024, or is it 2x 512? If you have just one stick of RAM, I suggest adding another, even if it is just a 128 MB, because with multiple RAM it lessens to workload on the one. If that's not the case, then there's the possibility that you're running out of space on your hard drive. My old computer slowed tremendously when we almost reached it's 40 GB limit. If your Hard Drive is almost full, try deleting some of the files you no longer use or need. If a hard drive gets to full, it has less space to use as a buffer. If neither of those work, then I really can't help. I don't know that much about graphics cards.

Reply: (edit)Oh, you can also try closing all background applications, and making sure that the apps running are neccesary. Having more than one application running with weigh down your computer with a bigger workload, causing it to slow to handle everything. It doesn't sound like it could be a virus problem, but better safe than sorry. Try running your anti-virus program and see if anything comes up.

Reply: (edit)"because with multiple RAM it lessens to workload on the one." that only apply's to dual channel mode in terms of providing a bigger memory bandwith pipeline. He can put 2 sticks of ram in there, but it isn't going to make any diff, because the memory pipeline is still going to be the same if it isn't it in as dual channel mode. Reply: (edit)Ah, I see. I'm a bit newer to computers ^__^;; Am still learning. Once I graduate from High School, I'm going to a tech college to study more. But it's still a possibility. That and the hard drive. Those are the only things I can think of.

Reply: (edit)What you can do in the mean time is go to sites like www.xbitlabs.com or www.tomshardware.com you can learn a lot on those sites. AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz 2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200 Nvidia 7900GT SATA II 2x 200gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0 Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

Reply: (edit)I dont think it is hard drive running out of space: I have 80 Gigs, and still have about 28 gigs of space left.... Exactly how do you know which background applications are neccessary and which ones not? (in the windows task manager)A lot of them have cryptic names, so I am not so sure about them....

Reply: (edit)On a motherboard that supports dual channel mode there should be 2 unique slots that you put 2 pairs of the exact same ram sticks into. That will then enables dual channel mode. If you put those 2 pairs of the exact same ram sticks into 2 regular ram slots on the mother then it will act like 2 normal sitcks of ram and will not be in dual channel mode. If you don't know if your comupter is in dual channel mode download cpu-z then click the memory tab and it will tell you if your pc is in dual channel mode. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz 2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200 Nvidia 7900GT SATA II 2x 200gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0 Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI
