Subject: My AGP card acts as PCI - HELP!OS: Win Xp ProCPU/Ram: 2.4ghz, 1gb ram |
Comment: I've been having the strangest problem lately... I own a ATI Radeon X700 Pro 256mb AGP card, and about a month ago I reformatted Windows (and upgraded from XP Home to Pro) with that card installed. All my drivers are updated as well. Basically what is happening right now is my AGP card has no AGP functionality at all right now, and I don't remember this happening right after my reformat, this was actually quite recent. (I only found out of the problem after installing a top-secret Microsoft game beta that I was recently signed up for,and getting a minor error message that the game would suffer performance because of no AGP enabled). I can't think of anything serious I did to make this happen. All I've done recently was the following: *Installed latest ATI drivers - 6.3 - in which the installer gave me problems, and I thus used System Restore to revert to 6.2 drivers, which are still kinda current. *Recently deleted the Microsoft .NET framework because I hated having to click to startup the PC...but recently reinstalled it because ATI Control Center needs it to function. That's about all I did...should I post a dxdiag file as well? I'm confused as anything right now. It's not an absolutely urgent matter, because I can still play my games, although I am noticing a slight hit in framerates and the like :( If anyone could clear this up for me, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Reply: (edit)No - I had someone do the reformat for me and I don't even know if I have a disk with drivers for the motherboard. I had all that stuff in a box somewhere but can't find it now (figures, right?)...that might explain why when I was recently in my BIOS I didn't see really any AGP options. Am I going to need those drivers for a fix?

Reply: (edit)It has nothing to do with your BIOS. You need to install the motherboard chipset drivers. I don't know why you formatted in the 1st place...there's not much to be gained going from Home to Pro, unless you're running on a network. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.mspx If you can't find the driver CD, go to the motherboard manufacturer's website, find your board, & download the drivers.

Reply: (edit)Actually the reason I formatted was because I had an inoperable virus which eliminated my desktop, among other things. Decided to go to XP Pro this time around. I should have brought that up - it would be silly, and stupid, to format a drive to install from Home to Pro, heh. And I know there isn't much difference between the two, except I've heard from many that Pro is much more stable. Anyhow, I will definitely try that and see if that works. Thanks!

Reply: (edit)Update - I got the AGP driver from my motherboard manufacturer, and I still have seen no results. Under Device Manager, the card still shows as being under a PCI bus, and my dxdiag results nor does ATI Control Panel show any AGP functionality. Do I need to uninstall/reinstall the card to make this work?

Reply: (edit)yikes, SiS based garbage! AGP is based on the PCI spec & is reported as PCI bus 2 in device manager...that's normal. What card do you have? Download CPUZ, click the mainboard tab, then see what's listed under Graphics Interface http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php#download

Reply: (edit)Downloaded that program...unfortunately for Graphics interface, that whole area is greyed out with no info whatsoever, all areas are blank. I guess that's not a good thing.

Reply: (edit)Already tried that - for some reason the newest drivers won't install - I get past the Installshield part but it doesn't let me install drivers, it simply disappears. So right now I'm using the second newest set of drivers.

Reply: (edit)THANKS SO MUCH!!! I didn't realize I had to totally uninstall drivers in order for that to work. Now my AGP shows up, and everything is working smooth. It resized my monitor so I had to fix that, but otherwise everything is cool. Can't thank you enough jam, if I could buy you a 12-pack, I surely would :D
