You should figure out which CPU you're gonna use before you decide on a motherboard.
FYI, there are other good brands besides Asus, and Intel is an incredibly mediocre brand for motherboards.
"Enough, enough bowing down to disillusion! Hats off & applause to rogues & evolution! The ripple effect is too good not to mention. If you’re not affected, you’re not paying attention!"
There are plenty of good motherboard manufacturers out there...Asus, DFI, GigaByte, Intel, MSI, & several others. The chipset the board is based on is the key to good performance. Intel chipsets are generally considered best for Intel CPUs. Board's based on nVidia's nForce chipsets are generally geared more toward gamer's & enthusiasts/overclockers. Also, if gaming performance is important, a board with onboard graphics should NOT be a considered...a *real* video card will be required. And 1GB RAM is the least amount you should have these days. Many are moving on to 2GB.
Here's a recent Tom's Hardware article about the latest chipset offered by AMD/ATI for the Core2. The article also discusses & compares performance differences between the AMD chipset vs Intel's & nVidia's offerings.
