Im fairly new to the PCI-X technology so I was wondering what would be a good card to start out with. The only games I play are the Sims2 and Simcity 4. I have a shi*ty X200 in there now and it takes 128mb from my ddr slot ram. So I have 384mb now which makes a lag in the Sims2, Simcity 4 runs pretty smoothly even on a full city though. I'm looking to spend about $160 on a new card. I was looking at the X700PRO though.

Look for the plain 6600 (nvidia) or X700 (ATI). Both cards will suit your needs. Upgrade to 1gb RAM with the extra cash for maximum efficiency.

You can get a lot of card for about $160, but I agree with randy_s about the added 512MB RAM. You could always do that later though. I suggest you have a look at the Radeon X800GT...here's a great article about it & the performance of the X700PRO (or lack of) is mentioned in the 1st couple of paragraphs:

IMO spend the $100 (US) on an X700 use the other $50 on another 512 stick of ram. I can safely tell you the X700 will sufficiently run the sims 2 at high settings, but since its the card I use I'm also more partial to it. Coming from an X200 however any newer card will easily look like night and day compared to your current card.

Does the 256mb and bit really do anything on the X800GT? If not I can get the 6600GT for a lower price, but on my pc's documentation it say's non-ATI based are not recommened does this truely mean something? I was thinking it had something to do with the drivers installing for the X200 off the restore cd. They install the drivers automaticly in it would interfer with drivers for the 6600GT rite?

My siqnature is out to lunch, It said it will be back in about 20mins.

Between the two cards, the X800GT is the better, but not by a huge margin. If I was you, I'll simply buy the cheaper of the two based on often overlooked perks like software bundle, warranty and driver support.

My sig is on sabbatical.
