i wish to max out my HP Vectra VL400. i know you will think it is a waste of money, but i wish to do so anyway. what i would appreciate is advice on how to do this.
current specs:
stock HP case
220watt stock PSU
2x Segate Cheetah 10k RPM SCSI hard drives
512mb RAM
1.0ghz P3
ATI Radeon 9200 128mb AGP
52x24x52x CD-RW
4x DVD-ROMPlanned upgrades:
Gamer case w/ LEDs and Neons
350watt PSU
Tualitun Core 1.4ghz P3 w/ adapter
768mb RAM
ATI Radeon 9600XT or 9600PRO
16x DVD-RW
16x DVD-ROMi know the high-density RAM will work, and i have a friend with a dell 1.0ghz and he upgraded with the tualitun 1.4ghz and adapter, and it worked for him, so it should work for me. other then those two things, and saying that money-wise it isnt worth it, does anyone have opinions or suggestions?
argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours

#1, I am 99% sure that video card won't work because it has a 4x/8x slot, and your motherboard is probably a 1x/2x slot.
I also wonder if that HP board can even fit in a new case.
Just being ULTRA cheap here...
CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819104210 $63
Mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157068 $47
512M DDR:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141120 $40
Look what you gain! The CPU is way faster, the AGP controller is way faster, USB2.0, way better memory performance, you actually have an upgrade path on that mobo (not much, but hey, it's something).
I know you didn't want to hear that, so ignore if it you want. It just doesn't make a bit of sense to me to do what you're proposing especially when you're moving all the components to a case anyway.
"Republicans in Congress are moving to ratify a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning, thus ending the Iraq insurgency."

Heropsycho's idea make much more sense, but it's your money...
Look at what $90 will get you at outpost.com:
http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4454956
ASUS A7N8X-X
Athlon XP 1800+
8.5 x 200MHz
1280MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7
Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB
WinME/WinXP Pro SP1

the card will work because the radeon 9200 is for 4x/8x AGP and it works
